Multiload is an IUD, an intrauterine device used for contraception. The plastic used in this IUD is a mixture of high density polyethylene, ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer and barium sulphate in a weight ratio 44/36/20. (MIMS, October 2013)This is one of a collection of items received from the practice of Dr Lachlan Hardy-Wilson, FRCOG, Launceston, Tasmania.Two flat boxes containing Multiload CU250 intrauterine devices. Front of box carries an image of a hand holding an IUD inserter, with the Multiload IUD at the top of the inserter, above a blue background on which an image of a uterus has been superimposed. Text printed on the front of the box reads 'MULTILOAD/CU250/intra-uterine/device/Attention:/the enclosed instructions should be followed carefully before insertion of the MULTILOAD-cu250'. Manufacturer's information is printed on the bottom section of the front of the box. Back of box is printed with distributor information. One box is sealed, and the other box has been opened. Back of sealed box carries a sticker which reads 'Date of manufacture: /12-08-1984'. Opened box contains a Multiload IUD in a sealed packet, a brochure outlining the recommended procedure for insertion, a booklet outlining prescribing information, and another booklet entitled 'Everything you have to know about Multiload'. This is one of a collection of items received from the practice of Dr Lachlan Hardy-Wilson, FRCOG, Launceston, Tasmania.Selection of five steel surgical needles. Four of the needles are 3" needles, and the fifth is a 3.5" needle. Each needle consists of a thin, hollow tube that is pointed at one end, attached to a circular fitting by which the needle can be attached to a syringe/vial. Between the circular fitting and the body of the needle is a section of metal with curved sides and squared edges to allow for grip. The grip section of the largest needle is engraved with the text '14G'.14Gsurgery

During surgery under general anaesthetic, these forceps were used to pull the tongue forward to keep the patient's airways clear from obstruction. This tool was in general use from the 1930s onwards in teaching hospitals, and became a standard piece of equipment on all anaesthetic trolleys. In the majority of teaching hospitals, the blades of these forceps were smooth and wide to cause less trauma to the tongue. This particular style of tongue forceps is known as Guy's tongue forceps.Dr Mitchell Henry O'Sullivan worked in the Victorian country town of Casterton as a general practitioner from 1919 until his death in 1977. He also practiced obstetrics. His son, Dr David More O'Sullivan donated his obstetric bag and its contents to the College in 1999. The bag and contents are a unique time capsule of the type of instruments and pharmaceuticals used in the inter-war period.Pair of metal forceps. Similar in appearance to a pair of scissors, and other surgical forceps, but with rounded teardrop shaped tips. There is also a notch clip for the handle to keep the forceps open. Inner aspect of both forceps blades engraved with the number '3'. The left hand blade is also engraved with a 'P'.anaesthesia

This style of mask was developed in Britain and began to appear from the 1930s, though original models may have been produced in the 1920s. Various patents for this style of mask were still being filed in the 1960s, so they were used for a considerable period of time. It is possible that the original filter pads for these masks contained asbestos, as they supposedly utilised 'fire proof' materials. Asbestos was already in use in other British respirator masks at this time. Original cataloguing information believed this item to be an eye shield, but further research has indicated that this is not the case.Mask consists of a metal plate designed to cover the lower half of the face. There is a recess along the top edge of the plate designed for the nose to sit in. There is a large oblong opening with rounded corners at the centre of the mask, which is a mouth opening to assist speech and is the main air intake. There are five round holes on either side of the mask, likely included to decrease the mask's breathing resistance for the wearer. Rounded slots at each edge of the mask are threaded through with an elastic strap, used for attaching the mask to the face. This mask would have been used with a filtering pad attached, but the pad is missing.

Reginald George Worcester (1903-1972) was a highly regarded obstetrics and gynaecology specialist. Between 1930 and 1933, Worcester was the Medical Superintendent at the Royal Women's Hospital. He obtained his MRCOG in England in 1935, and on his return to Australia was appointed as a university tutor in obstetrics and gynaecology. In 1939, he was appointed as the honorary gynaecologist to outpatients at the Royal Women's Hospital. Worcester served with the AIF during World War II as C.O. of the 17th Field Ambulance in Darwin and as A.D.M.S., Northern Territory Force, and the 2nd/9th Australian Army Corps from 1942 to 1943. His major war service, however, was undertaken in Borneo and Moratai, commanding the 2nd/1st Australian C.C.S. and the 2nd/9th Australian General Hospital. Worcester acquitted himself admirably during the war, with company commander Hubert Smith praising his contribution in no uncertain terms: " His [Worcester's] success as C.O. of a Field Ambulance resulted from a complete understanding of what the unit should be able to do in the transportation of casualties in the field, as well as of the usual medial functions. He organized both with efficiency and at all times difficult decisions were made with humility and good humour. The personal qualities which made him such a calm and considerate consultant never left him, even in the most dangerous and trying circumstances of war." Worcester's time in the army greatly affected his health, but despite this he was able to build a strong and reputable practice upon his return to Australia. As outlined by Arthur Hill, Worcester " was appointed in turn to the following important posts: Honorary Outpatient Obstetrician and Inpatient Gynaecologist to the Women’s Hospital (1946-1948); Honorary Gynaecologist to Prince Henry’s Hospital (1946-1963); Guest Examiner in London for the R.C.O.G. (1953); Examiner in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (1957-1964); Visiting Gynaecologist to the Repatriation General Hospital, Heidelberg 1963- 1967); and first Victorian Members’ representative (1947-1950) and later Fellows’ Representative (1953-1960) on the Australian (Regional) Council of the R.C.O.G. To these posts he brought the benefits of clear thinking and critical awareness. In 1949 he was elected F.R.C.O.G." In early 1967, Worcester suffered a hemiplegia which left him with an impaired gait and paralysed his right hand. Although unable to do major surgery, he returned to part-time practice by September 1967. His ill-health persisted though, and he was retired from practice in 1970. There are two locks on the top of the case, and a metal clasp on either side to fasten the bag closed. The case is embossed with the text 'R.G. WORCESTER' on top, in a position between the two locks and below the handle at bottom centre. The inside of the case is lined with a canvas bag that is buttoned to the case with press studs. Metal tongue depressor (blade). The depressor is bent in a curve at one end, and bent 90 degrees square at the other end. Depressor shaft has serrations on the lower outer aspect. At the upper end of the shaft there is a longer, wider flange with multiple serrations under the proximal point. This object fits into the Boyle Davis mouth gag (see item 254).- The number '21' is written on the inner aspect of the blade. The text 'P.R & Co.' are inscribed on the outer distal end. The house, known as 'Ardcloney' was built by Dr. Faulkner in 1911. The land on which it is built was The Dell which was previously owned by Mr. Austin. Dr. Faulkner had a medical practice in Sunbury in until his death in 1922 when he was run over by a train while holidaying in Adelaide. Dr George James Scantlebury practised as a doctor in Linton in the 1880s. He married Catherine Millington Baynes who was Postmistress at Linton. The family moved from Linton to Cheltenham in 1889. Vera Scantlebury was born in Linton in 1889 just before the family left for Cheltenham. The Scantlebury's other three children were all born in Cheltenham, George Clifford (Cliff) in 1890, Dorothy (Dot) in 1893, and Ethel Eileen (Eileen) in 1899. Vera Scantlebury (afterwards Scantlebury-Brown) also became a doctor. She was instrumental in the formation of the Infant Welfare Division of the Victorian Health Department, and was first Director of Infant Welfare. This book is of general as well as local interest as it gives short biographies of prominent 19th century Australian men. Included in the book are people of local importance to Warrnambool and district – Dr Fleetwood, Dr Singleton, Rev. George Tait, James Stewart Butters, Stephen Henty and Dr Thomas Scott. This book is important because it has interesting and informative biographies of prominent Australian men of the 19th century but it is of greater importance to Warrnambool’s historians because of its biographies of men who were influential in Warrnambool’s history. It is also of interest that the book has the signature of Henri Worland, the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1918 to 1949. Worland was also a great Warrnambool historian, preserving items of historical importance, writing on local history and talking about our history for a number of years in a series of broadcasts on Warrnambool’s 3YB. It is due to him that we have ‘Australian Representative Men’ in our collection today. This is a hard cover book with a black cover and gold-coloured lettering on the spine. The pages are unnumbered. The book contains 107 biographies of well-known 19th century men in Australia, together with their portraits fronted by a piece of tissue paper. The book also has articles on the Federal Council and the Soudan Expedition. The first couple of pages are missing. The cover is a little stained and some of the pages have blotches on them. The Wombeetch Puyuun Monument was erected by his friend and Guardian, James Dawson in 1885, largely at his own expense. At the top is engraved 1840, which marked the beginning of the demise of the local First Nations people. Below are a boomerang, a club, and a message stick. At the bottom is the year 1883 which saw the last of the local First Nations people on Country with the death of Wombeetch Puyuun. On the base are the words: "In memory of the Aborigines of this district. Here lies the body of the chief, Wombeetch Puyuun, and the last of the local tribes".
