The Wesleyan Church, Denham Street in Lower Hawthorn, as the area was then called, was opened on 2 May 1886. The building was designed by Geelong architect William Henry Cleverdon and was built of brick in the Gothic style. Its dimensions were 55 x 33 ft and the façade incorporated a rose window and spire 50 ft high. A wooden vestry was placed to the rear. The building and the organ were seriously damaged by fire on 1 April 1970, started by a painter's blowtorch. The church was not rebuilt. The organ was built in 1900 by E. Cornwall Cook, of Barrington Place, Burwood Road, Hawthorn. It was opened on 8 August 1901 by George Peake. The Swell strings may have been added (or substituted for earlier material) by Frederick Taylor, whose workshop was nearby in Burwood Road. At some stage the colourfully decorated façade pipes were repainted in a gold finish. Edward Blatchford Wright was born in 1894 in Birmingham, son of Edward Wright and Florence Emuss. It is not known when he migrated to Australia but he served in the AIF during WW1, seeing action in France. On enlistment aged 20 years 9 months, he gave his occupation as farmer. He married Gertrude Matilda Wain in 1919. He came to Surrey Hills c1924. He was a grocer in the area for several decades with shops in Canterbury Road. In 1942 he is listed at 235 Union Road. This was a residential address. Alan Holt's Surrey Hills property register places him at 365 Canterbury Road (c1920-1930) and 359 Canterbury Road (c1930-1940). He died in 1972 in Mont Albert. His last electoral roll entry in 1968 gives 18 Serpentine Street, Mont Albert. Children in photo identified as John Colin Reaburn, also known as Jack, and his young brother, Wallace James Reaburn. The Reaburn family came to Surrey Hills in the 1890's and first lived in Russell Street. John Colin Reaburn (B 1899 in Russell St, Surrey Hills; D 1987, Box Hill) and Wallace James Reaburn (B 1910; D 1996) were the children of John Reaburn (1873-1963) and his wife Jane (Jeannie) Nelson Harkins (1875-1959). They has a sister Winifred Jean Reaburn (1904-1983). The family later lived in Union Road on the SW corner of Guildford Road. The house was called 'Fairbank'. John completed his education to eighth grade of Surrey Hills State School, going on to University High School and became an accountant. He later moved away from the area but when the collection of local history commenced in the 1970's, John was living near Belmore Road and became involved. He had a clear recall of early days and played a valuable part in recording details of early Surrey Hills.B/W photo (photo dark) of two young children. Joan Mary Bray was born 6/9/1915 in Brisbane, the daughter of Herbert Edward Bray and his wife Grace (nee Shepherd) who married in Wisbech, Cambridge in 1892. The family lived at 5 Barton Street from the late 1920s. She completed her primary schooling at Auburn Primary by travelling there by the little black bus along Canterbury Road. She then went on to Mont Albert Central School and Melbourne Girls High. Locally she belonged to the 1st Surrey Hills Girl Guide Company at Holy Trinity Church. She trained as a nurse at Epworth Hospital and in 1941 served with the army at Gaza Hospital in the Middle East, then in New Guinea. From 1944 until the end of the war she was in Bougainville. Her mother died in Surrey Hills 29/9/1945 and her father moved to Hawthorn; he died in 1955. She had 3 older sisters: Eveline Grace (1893-1978) m Eric Benson; Violet Constance (1894-1983 - ? Sister Constance in mother’s death notice); Dorothy Maud (1896 - ? Sister Ursula in mother’s death notice). After the war she was a RSSL nurse, Matron of St Gabriel’s Baby Home in Balwyn, then Director of Nursing at the Royal Eye and Ear Hospital, East Melbourne. She resigned to be married. His dates: 1913-1993. ‘Kenilworth’, 9 Beatrice Avenue was home of Edmund Holt, his wife and 3 sons Ray, Fred and Alan who attended Surrey Hills State School in their primary years. The family were very involved with the Methodist (Uniting) Church. Alan became organist and for some years also played at the Canterbury Presbyterian Church. He was well-liked from his days as a newspaper delivery boy, and after marriage lived at 62 Broughton Road and then 2 Earle Street taking part in various local activities with his wife Edna and three boys. After completing his secondary education at University High Alan joined the Public Service and after a time in the Premier’s Department moved to the Lands Department. He became Secretary of that department and after retirement moved to 13 Berry Street, Box Hill. He keenly researched the history of Surrey Hills. Date is approximate. Donor is the widow of Thomas Hall. Biographical notes provided: Thomas was born in Melbourne on 14/9/1928 and lived at Olinda until c1932 when his family moved to 10 Pembroke Street, Surrey Hills. He attended Surrey Hills State School, then went on to Box Hill High School (and / or Technical School - both are mentioned). He bought a horse and cart in order to be able to make deliveries for trades people and hence pay his way through technical school. He attended technical school 3 evenings per week studying building, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and bricklaying. He built many homes in the eastern suburbs. He played tennis and attended church at Church of Christ. Married Margaret on 2/4/1955. Retired to Dromana where he was a member of the garden club at Redhill. The quarry was part of John Butler Maling's property. He was one of the original settlers of the area and farmed the area between Weybridge Street and Whitehorse Road. Clay was quarried from part of this area and used to make the bricks used in the construction of his home, known as 'Ancyra'. This is still extant at the corner of Weybridge and James Streets. Maling grazed cows and used the quarry as a water source. He was the uncle of John Butler Maling, Mayor of Camberwell. He was married to Kate Conlon in 1882. They had 3 children: Silas Young, Alick and Zillah. Maling was born in c1829 in Shepreth, Cambridgeshire; he died in Surrey Hills on 9 October 1912 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery - CE-*-0586. Mrs Kate Maling (born c1859 in Co Meath, Ireland) died at the property on 8 March 1921. She is buried in Brighton General Cemetery. Probate was valued at over 10,000 pounds and included other properties in Sandringham, Hawthorn and Macedon. At the time of her death the Surrey Hills property was described as being 23 acres with 2 brick houses, 1 cow, 2 heifers and 40 fowls or chickens. The property was subdivided after her death. The property was subdivided into 110 house blocks in c1923 - see Maling's Estate subdivision flyer on the State Library of Victoria's website. This shows that the Grovedale Park site had been acquired by Camberwell Council by this time. An attached newspaper clipping documents prices realised for a cross-section of blocks. The MMBW map of 1925, also on the SLV website, shows the outline of the clayhole / quarry. The quarry was filled in after several drownings or near drownings and the land is now occupied by a park and playground, known as Grovedale Road Park, maintained by the City of Boroondara. Beckett Park is sited on horizon to the left beyond the trees. This church was built in 1907 and became known as Holy Trinity Surrey Hills. This name had previously been used by the Anglican Church in Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert. This henceforth became known as St George's Anglican Church, Mont Albert. There are 2 copies: the original donated print and an enlargement. The original is mounted on card with photo mounts along with 890, 891 and 892. It measures 13 cm x 9 cm. Norman Carter took many photos of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert from the 1920s in particular of events and activities associated with the Church of England.Black and white photo of the original Holy Trinity Church building in Union Road. It is constructed of weatherboards, above which there is plasterboard and timber strapping. The roof is of terracotta tiles with a small steeple at the front and a larger one towards the rear of the building. There is a box bay window at the front and the entrance is from a porch on the southern side of the building. This is approached by stairs. Part of the vicarage can be seen on the northern high side of the church and to the south there is vacant land. The whole property sits behind a simple post and wire fence. There is a phaeton in the foreground beside a relatively newly planted street tree. The donor George Lister Coop was about 19 years of age when he took this photo. It is one of a small series of photos donated by him that relate to Mont Albert and Surrey Hills stations. He has always had an interest in railways and there are other examples of his documentation of railway history in other collections contributing to this database. This documents the original building on the northern platform of the Mont Albert station. The railway line was extended out to Lilydale with work commencing in 1882. It is not known exactly when the Mont Albert station was built, but it opened in 1890. It is presumed that this building was demolished when the third line was constructed in 1971. At this time the nearby Surrey Hills original station buildings were demolished.A black & white photo of Mont Albert station taken from the north platform adjacent to High Street, looking towards Box Hill. Built in 1880, the Edmund Blacket designed building was eventually sold in 1971.
