This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. 63 and 117 Murray Street houses are extant (Google maps image capture Dec 2018).Victorian Heritage Database - HO131 63 Murray Street Caulfield https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/35569 (as of 14/08/2021) "Marston" at no. 63 Murray Street, Caulfield South, was built by J.E. Guest, a contractor resident in nearby Downshire Road, in 1889-90, presumably as a speculative venture together with the extant house at adjoining No.61. It is aesthetically significant. It is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) as an exceptionally richly ornamented medium sized Boom period villa in Caulfield South, being unusual in this respect in its locale and comparing with nearby "Sprouston" at 19 Blanche Street (1887). A recording of a speech by PM Robert Menzies at Legacy House during the launch of Legacy Week in 1960. The Prime Minister is recognising the importance of the welfare carried out by Legacy for the families of service personnel who have died as a result war or since. The event was covered in the press, with a photo appearing in The Age on 6 September 1960. The article was saved in a scrapbook of press clippings. The Ballarat School of Mines opened in the former Ballarat Circuit Court House in 1870. The court house was demolished in 1915 to make way for the Ballarat Technical Art School. Photos of Legacy Widows, volunteers and staff, preparing food for visitors to Legacy House. Legacy House was open Monday to Friday with many events scheduled for Widows to participate in such as Tuesday craft sessions, painting lessons, stamp sorting and a cup of tea was always available. From a Widows' Newsletter the lady on the far left is Sue Sargent a volunteer helper. The paid kitchen lady is Audrey, seen on far right in striped skirt. Some of the photos were featured in the April 1996 edition of The Answer newsletter, which mentions 'Audrey and her band of volunteer helpers serve refreshments at minimal cost to all Legacy ladies calling into the Clubrooms, Monday to Friday 10 - 3:30pm.' Six photos of the exterior and interior of Thomas Kinsella's past residence in grounds of St Patrick's Catholic Church taken 2000. The house "Donanore" was built in 1900 by Thomas Kinsella and was the family residence for many years. The Stawell news of 26.1.1924 reported the arrival of nuns from the order of Sisters of Joseph. The nuns resided in the house for many years. Three of the six photos are of the interior. One of the front door surrounded by stained glass windows. Another a detail of an external door. The third a view of a statue at the end of the hallway. The house was known as Rothwell and later as Kiora. It was the home of Mr and Mrs Tom Bulmer for many years.
