The Minutes of the Kew Historical Society record that in the year 2000, the Society paid for a Town Crier's outfit. This outfit was later used in public events relating to fundraising for the restoration of the Kew Court House at 188 High Street, Kew. A member, usually Philip Slobom, dressed as the Town Crier, used this bell to draw attention to the campaign. Wood handled, brass handbell. Leslie van der Sluys (1939-2010), an Australian artist - painter and printmaker - was born in Victoria. He grew up in Mary Street, Kew with his family before moving to Deepdene. His sister Robin Kelly (nee Vandersluys) donated this artists' linocut to the Kew Historical Society as part of a larger collection in 2018.Original linoleum block of Kookaburra and Waratah, 1982, by the Melbourne artist Leslie Van Der Sluys. The block is broken, preventing its use for further editions of the print. The incised linoleum block shows the reverse of the finished print. The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories.This outfit was donated by Netta Fuller.Two piece grey silk outfit comprising a tailored bodice and a very full skirt. The bodice has puffed leg-of-mutton sleeves and is heavily encrusted with large grey artificial pearls and steel beads of the period. The skirt is cut to allow for a long train at the back. Grey pearls and steel beads are similarly used on the right side of the front of the skirt. Metallic braid may have been added at a later date. The outfit has been much altered over time. There is evidence of shattered silk in parts of the garment. Printed on a strap at the waist is the label of Peter Robinson, Oxford Street/Regent Street.Peter Robinson. Gwen McWilliam is well known as an authority on the history of Boroondara and the author of a large number of books and pamphlets about the City. She was awarded the medal of the Order of Australia in 2001 ‘for service to the community of Hawthorn and district, particularly through the research, documentation and publication of its history.’ This map from her collection was donated to the Kew Historical SocietyPlan of Heidelberg, annotated with details about the occupancy pre and post European settlement. The plan also contains geological references. The plan is included and analysed in volume 2 of the Heidelberg Conservation Study (1985). The original plan was published created in 1982.
