On 18th June 1853 the 839 ton ship 'Earl of Charlemont' was wrecked near Barwon Heads. Her 450 passengers and crew struggled ashore without loss of life. Among them were John and Anne Morton, their 3 sons and 5 daughters. Before leaving Ireland, their eldest son George Pickering Morton, had married Anne Eliza Burrowes. Their son, Thomas Richard Burrowes Morton, born in Melbourne on 12 March 1854, was usually known as ' T.R.B.' Aged 26 he married Louisa Mary Esther Morgan. In 1909 Louisa Morton had a cottage built at Points Lonsdale and named it 'Dorrington', surname of her Welsh Grandmother. During previous holidays the family stayed at the 'Terminus'. They travelled by train from Blackburn to Port Melbourne, paddle-steamer to Queenscliff and horse-bus to Point Lonsdale.Black and white copy, No. 14 of set of 27 - Woman and child at beach. Unnamed. Pictured here is Tunku Abdul Rahman, the Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1957 to 1970, leading Malaysia through its transition to independent statehood. Rahman visited International House in November 1959 during a state visit to Australia, also attending the Melbourne Cup and a dinner at Government House. Sarah Jane Ellis was matron of the Ballarat Female Refuge, Scott's Parade, from 1906 until 31 May 1921. The Ballarat Female Refuge was established in Grant Street by a group of 26 women in 1867. Caselli designed the building in Scott's Parade and unmarried mothers were catered for in this residence from 1884 until 1941. The Alexandra Babies' Home was built adjacent to the Refuge and opened in 1909. The Babies' Home closed in 1973.A woman in white apron and cap. The photograph shows L - R. Ted Child, Ivy Child and Ethel Child. Ivy is standing between her parents and is holding her cat Dorlam. The photograph was probably taken at Ted and Ethel's property in Childs Road c1950s. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Lucelle Hats advertised itself from the late 1940s to the 1960s as a high-class millinery business situated at 80 Castlereigh Street, Sydney. The style of the hat conforms to the generally smaller and flatter styles promoted as fashionable in 1950s periodicals. Interestingly velvet and felt hats were by the mid-1950s being advertised as suited to mature women. Penny CAREY WELLS (08 November 1950- ) Born Hobart, Victoria Penny Carey Wells has worked as a paper and book artist in Tasmania since the early 80s and taught at the School of Art, University of Tasmania, from 1985-1997. She is currently employed part time at the State Library of Tasmania as a technician in paper conservation and exhibition officer. Gilda Gude was a student at the Ballarat Technical Art School during the 1930s. She is the sister of Nornie Gude. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood. Mary Pauline Daly was a gracious benefactor of the Braille and Talking Book Library. Limoges porcelain is hard-paste porcelain produced by factories in and around the city of Limoges, France beginning in the late 18th century. Limoges had strong antecedents in the production of decorative objects. The city was the most famous European centre of vitreous enamel production in the 12th century.
