Trude Jonas was a Melbourne milliner with her business operating from 159 Mavern Road, Malvern.The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. While most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women, there are a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. Osiris figurine, Late Ptolemaic Period, 664 - 30 BCE
This item is part of the Dodgson Collection, which was bequeathed to Queen's College in 1892 by the Rev. James Dodgson. The collection was created by Aquila Dodgson, brother of James. Aquila Dodgson was a friend of the English Egyptologist Flinders Petrie, and it was through this friendship the Aquila was able to acquire ancient Egyptian artefacts. A detailed study of the collection was made by Christine Elias "Discovering Egypt: Egyptian Antiquities at the University of Melbourne", M.A. thesis 2010.Crudely formed figure of Osiris with tripartite crown and arms crossed in front holding crook and flail. Holmes Family Ascot World War One memorabilia This postcard was sent from France during World War One. The writer, Gordon Spittle, enlisted with the brother of the recipient, Mary Coghill Holmes. Standard Australian Department of Defence issue khaki fur felt slouch hat as worn by Army personnel. The hat brim has a bound edge finish and one side of the brim is folded against the hat crown. Female Relatives Badge inscribed with the date 1940 and number 61898. It was manufactured by G & E Rodd 1940. The Female Relative Badge was issued to the wife and/or mother or nearest female relative of Australians who were on active service abroad during World War II. Each star on the badge represents a son or relative on active service.Believed to be the property of Mrs Ellen Clark whose son W.C Clark VX34546 was on active service.Circular badge with a central wreath surmounted by a crown. Within the wreath is the inscription 'TO THE WOMEN OF AUSTRALIA', with another wreath within containing an outline of Australia. A bar with a central star is suspended below the main badge. The reverse is impressed with a serial number and the maker's details. A safety pin on a chain is attached to Kings Crown and there is a clasp attached to the reverse.The reverse bears an impressed serial number '61898'. Medal - Defence Medal in box, c. 1945
Charles worked in the Merchant service. After enforced retirement due to injury he was active in Civil Defence.The Defence Medal is a campaign medal instituted by the United Kingdom in May 1945, to be awarded to citizens of the British Commonwealth for both non-operational military and certain types of civilian war service during the Second World War. It was Awarded for 3 years, 360, 180 or 90 days, depending on area and nature of serviceThe medal is cupro-nickel, with the uncrowned effigy of King George VI on the obverse. The reverse has a conventional oak tree centrally, with a crown above, with two lions counter rampart as supporters between the dates 1939 and 1945. The base of the medal reverse has the words ‘THE DEFENCE MEDAL’. The ribbon is orange with green outer stripes, each green stripe having a black pin-stripe running down the centre. The green represents the Islands of the United Kingdom, the orange represents enemy attacks, and the black represents the black outs. The medal is housed in a small cardboard box.
