A recording of a speech by PM Robert Menzies at Legacy House during the launch of Legacy Week in 1960. The Prime Minister is recognising the importance of the welfare carried out by Legacy for the families of service personnel who have died as a result war or since. The event was covered in the press, with a photo appearing in The Age on 6 September 1960. The article was saved in a scrapbook of press clippings. This ornamental Sphinx is a memento of the founder of Melbourne Legacy, Lieutenant General Sir Stanley Savige, K.B.E, C.B., D.S.O., M.C., E.D.O The Sphinx was presented to the then Sergeant Stanley Savige as the 24th Battalion Musketry Prize, whilst he was serving in that unit in Egypt, during the First World War.Sir Stanley Savige founded Melbourne Legacy in 1923. Bell was presented to the Melbourne Legacy Club by the departing president E.R.F. Serman in 1929. It was used during Comradeship Committee meetings.E.R.F. Serman was the Melbourne Legacy Club president in 1928-1929. Comradeship Committee meetings were very important to the Legatees.18 Pounder Shell casing that has been polished and had a small brass hook welded to the base. The casing has been split and bears the signs of being hit with a hammer. There is an inscription engraved on the front. The shell is hung from a brass arch which has been mounted to a wooden base. Two small brass hooks on the base act as a mount for the mallet. The brass arch and hooks are attached to the wooden base via flat head screws from the underside. Notes from the meeting of the Junior Legatee Committee held on 28 September 1942 reveal how Legatees perceived the need to establish a residence for juniors. The notes detail the type of residence which would be appropriate, and how it should be funded and run in broad outline. These views were informed by an interview with the Headmaster of Box Hill Grammar School, a co-educational boarding school.It is interesting to note the different attitudes towards boys and girls at that time; girls required sewing and music rooms to replace the workshop and gym for the boys. The book details the first fifty years of Melbourne Legacy. The book was written by Mark Lyons. The foreword was written by Sir Roden Cutler V.C., K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O., C.B.E.. Governor of New South Wales. From the National Library of Australia's website: 'The first Legacy club was formed in Melbourne in 1923 by a group of young men who had served together in the Australian forces in World War I. They were all in business and sought to help other ex-soldiers in business. After two years, they changed their objectives, deciding henceforth Legacy would care for the widows and children of their war-time comrades. Legacy clubs were soon functioning in all states in Victoria. There are now 47 Legacy clubs within Australia and one in London. He advises that there was only one dissenting committee member (Legatee Carleton) who felt that the property was too far from the city for convenience.
