Richard Squire was a student at the School of Mines Ballarat In 1905 Richard Squire was manager of the West Berry Consols at Allendale, and developed an improved system of mine ventilation, which was supported in "The Age." He was successful in combating and remedying the gas and ventilation troubles of the Deep Mines of Creswick and Allendale Districts after all had failed. MINE MANAGERS’ ASSOCIATION. Ballarat Branch. ... Mr R. B. Squire, manager of the West Berry Consols, at Allendale, submitted a paper detailing what he had done tor the betterment of ventilation in the alluvial mines of Smeaton and Mary borough districts- Members gave Mr Squire every credit for the results that he claimed to have effected; the adoption of his ideas had testified to their value to mine-owners. It was painted out, however, that for want of a thorough debate of the subject with experienced men the author had unwittingly included some general statements that required modifying in some points and extending in others, in justice to other workers among the earlier and the present day managers of mines. Val grew up in Ballarat and started school in the early 1940s, during World War II. Her mother was a teacher and her father worked in Melbourne on war-related business. She attended kindergarten, which she recalled was unusual for the time. She attended Humphrey Street State School and her secondary schooling was at Ballarat Girls' School. Val completed her secondary school education at 15 years of age and went on to tertiary study at The School of Mines, where she trained in art and dressmaking. After completing her education, she worked as draughtswoman before becoming a teacher. The remainder of her career was spent teaching art and textiles at both secondary and tertiary levels. Heather Durant (nee Walton) began as an Assistant Librarian at the SMB Campus in 1951. In December 1961 she resigned from the position due to her approaching marriage. No replacement was found so she returned in a "part-time position". She progressed to head librarian. Heather resigned again in 1962 and took a break for eight years. She then returned to the school. Combining the two periods of work she was employed for almost 50 years. During her time with the University of Ballarat she made an important contribution to the operation of the SMB Library. At times she was put in charge and worked to maintain library standards and collections through her work in library acquisitions and cataloguing.
