Local Cemetery Excursion Sunday 27 May 1990 departed Eltham Shire Office at 9.30am and finish mid afternoon. Visits to Eltham , Kangaroo Ground, Queenstown (Smiths Gully), Nillumbik (Diamond Creek), St Katherines (St Helena) Hurst family graves at Hurstbridge and a little known early cemetery at Grteensborough. Attended by 20 members. In each case we were introduced to the cemetery with a brief talk. At Eltham, Frank Burgoyne gave us the benefit of his knowledge as a member of the cemetery trust and at Kangaroo Ground, Bruce Ness spoke in a similar capacity. The lunch stop was at Hurstbridge where we visited the Hurst family graves. The President of Nillumbik Historical Society, Jock Ryan, joined us at the Nillumbik (Diamond Creek) cemetery. Document, Specifications for Building a Stone Wall and Making a Brock Tunnel for the Council of the School of Mines Ballarat, 1898, 1898
Four handwritten foolscap pages. The wall was to be built on the Eastern side of the ground facing Albert Street. The stonewall to be 73 feet long and eight feet six inches high. A curved tunnel formed to be about 50 feet long. In 1861, August Dhmel of Slatey Creek near Ballarat, applied to be naturalized. He was born in Prussia and arrived by ship from Hamburg in 1849. He was thirty years old and was wishing to purchase land intending to settle for the rest of his life in the Colony of Victoria. This would be granted after taking the Oath before one of the Judges of the Supreme Court. This was taken before Sir Redmond Barry, Knight, in April 1861. In 1860, Charles Herold of Ballarat, a gold miner applied to be naturalized. He was born in Kitzinger Bavaria and at the age of thirty-five arrived by the ship "Mary Ross" in Tasmania in 1854 from Hamburg. He then came to the Colony of Victoria by the SS "Queen" in 1857. He wished to purchase land and settle in the Colony for life. This was granted but he first needed to swear an Oath before one of the Judges of the Supreme Court. The Certificate was signed by Henry Barkly. Charles Herold took the Oath before Robert Molesworth, Judge of the Supreme Court on 18 July 1860.Thick cream paper, hand written in ink.
