Newsrail is a monthly railway magazine covering the railways and tramways of Victoria. This publication was launched in January 1973 by the Australian Railway Historical Society's Victorian Division. It replaced the Divisional Diary magazine which had been published since November 1957. It includes features on both rural and metropolitan railways and contains articles and photographic presentations. Our collection includes all issues from January until December 1974. This featured item from January 1974 includes an article and photograph of the Northeast Railway Centenary celebration train, R707, to Wodonga. These photographs are of winners in the Orbost Agricultural Show's Show Boy and Show Girl competitions. The first photograph is of Peter? Joiner and Jarod Forrester in the Master Show Bow Competition. The second is of Pauline Bommer (Weston) and her daughter at the Nowa Nowa Gymkhana. The third has Chloe Kenny on the left. in the fourth photograph are Dianna Munn with Laura; Sharon Chambers with Jessica and Sharon Cook with Tayla. These photographs are pictorial records of a social event in Orbost. They are associated with the Orbost Agricultural Society 's Annual Show which has been a major event in Orbost for over a century. Agricultural shows are an important part of cultural life in small country towns and the Orbost Show is an integral part of Orbost 's agricultural history. Four black / white photographs related to the Orbost Show. 3086.1 is of three young boys wearing sashes. The middle boy is holding a trophy. 3086.2 shows a woman bending over a young girl wearing a sash. 3086.3 has three girls, one one right wearing a hat, one on left has a sash. 3086.4 is of three women holding babies. The photograph has recorded rail smash which occurred at Sunbury on 17th April 1919 when a stock train crashed into a goods train. It caused a lot of damage to the rolling stock and blocked rail traffic on the Bendigo and Maryborough lines. 1 NAL - Mt. Lyell - (Mt. Lyell) O 5; 1 NBL - 1st. class saloon car (20) In Active Service Puffing billy railway NAL FIRST-CLASS SALOON CAR. Four saloon end-platform cars originally built during 1901–1902 by the Lancaster Railway Carriage and Wagon Company Ltd. for the 3'6" gauge Mt. Lyell Mining & Railway Company in Tasmania and classed O. Converted for use as second-class cars on the 2'6" gauge Puffing Billy Railway during 1965–1966, these cars were reclassified NBL and numbered 1–4. The L recognises their Mt. Lyell origin, No. 1 was kept for use as the Railway's VIP car and was reconditioned to a higher standard. No. 2 was similarly upgraded in 1985 for use on special occasions. In 1989 No. 3 was similarly reconditioned with No. 4 receiving similar treatment in 1995. These cars were re-classified NAL in recognition of their new first-class nature. The Mt Lyell Railway was closed in 1963 and subsequently dismantled, but fortunately several of the locomotives and carriages passed into preservation. This original Mt Lyell Railway passenger carriage was donated to the Puffing Billy Preservation Society by the Mount Lyell Mining & Railway Company in the 1960s and was converted to 2' 6" gauge. The book was written by Deborah Hall in order to preserve the memories of Orbost locals as well as to record its early history. Local history tends to be less documented than other types, with fewer books and artifacts than that of a country or continent. Many local histories are recorded as oral tales or stories and so are more vulnerable than more well known issues.
