Lake Bolac & District Historical Society
Black and white photograph, Lake Bolac Overflow, 1956
The outlet for the overflow was originally cut in 1926 and concreted over in 1928. This photo shows flooding into Salt Creek in 1956 and looks towards the west and Rockbank. Boards were added to raise the water level of the lake. These were put in annually, below the walkway depicted, until in 1966 the level of the concrete weir was raised. Consequently the lake did not flush through as readily and it gradually silted up and the lake became shallower.lake bolac, overflow, 1926, 1928, flood, 1966, salt creek, rockbank -
The Beechworth Burke Museum
Animal specimen - Squirrel, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
The Grey Squirrel is a small to medium sized member of the rodent family Sciuridae. This species is commonly located in England, Wales and central Scotland. They are known for their agility and ability to climb trees. Interestingly, the tail of the Squirrel serves the purpose of keeping the rain, wind or cold off the body of the animal, to help it cool off in hot weather, to counterbalance when moving and can be utilized as a parachute when jumping from one location to the next. Squirrels consume foods that are rich in protein, carbohydrates and fats. They eat nuts, seeds. fruits and vegetation. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum and the National Museum of Victoria, as well as individuals such amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen has silver-grey fur with a pale cream coloured underside. The tale stands tall along the back of the specimen and is bushy. The specimen is of a smaller size and has no tuffs on its ears. It stands on a wooden platform and has two paper tags tied to its hands. One hand is stylized in a raised position while the other remains downward.A.4483 / 39. Ashtray, Alka Kunst, Warrnambool Hopkins River, c. 1960
This item was bought as a souvenir of Warrnambool in the mid 20th century when cigarette smoking was more widespread and was socially acceptable. Tourism in Warrnambool has been an important industry for over 100 years. In the late 19th century Warrnambool was promoted as a spa resort with its mild climate, sea bathing and its hot and cold sea water baths complex. Today visitors come in winter for the May Racing Carnival and to see the Southern Right whales at Logans Beach and in summer they come for a beach holiday. The image on the dish shows the Warrnambool Hopkins River near its mouth. The boatshed is no longer there with sections of the building being relocated to a site in Henna Street and used for indoor recreational purposes. This ash tray is retained as an example of a local tourist souvenir sold to tourists in the 1960s. This is a small white china dish made in an oval shape and slightly raised from the surface on which it sits. The ends of the dish have four gold coloured indents for stubbing cigarettes. There is a gold rim around the edge of the dish and a coloured image of the old boat shed and jetty on the Hopkins River in Warrnambool. Document - Complaints Regarding Standards Of Accommodation And Service, 27.05.1968
Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today. This letter is significant because it reflects the relationship between Bob Hymans and the Management Committee.A letter from the Management Committee related to complaints regarding standards of accommodation and service in commercial premises at ski resorts. The possibility of the introduction of a grading system was raised. Whilst not being specific in regard to Mr. Hymans, the Committee asked him to keep a close watch on aspects of accommodation and service in the coming season with a view to improving standards generally at Falls Creek.falls creek tourist area management committee, falls creek administration, bob hymans -
