Used at School of mines and industries Ballarat As H.V. McKay's Sunshine Harvester business expanded there was a requirement for a school to train the company's apprentices. In 1911, H.V. McKay wrote to the Victoria Cabinet offering 2,000 pounds and 4 1/2 acres of land in Derby Rd for a technical school, On the 7th July 1913, the new Sunshine Technical School opened with a wooded administration building with six class rooms and a large galvanised iron workshop for the trade apprentices. Mr George Baxter was appointed principal with assistant teachers, A.J. Dunlop (Maths & English), W.W. Anderson (Art) & H.B. Ernest (Maths & Science). Seventy students were enrolled in the first year of which 44 were apprentices from the Harvester Works. During the First World War Years (1914 - 1918) there was a difficulties with staffing and enrollments. The school was also used to provide vocational training for wounded returned soldiers. I have been interested in urban design and landscape since a child. My early fascination with maps corresponded to early mark making inspired by maps, topography, legends and aerial depictions. This developed into the use of a bold colour palette often used by map makers to delineate sections, contours and geology. Over time I experimented with a range of techniques and enjoy pushing expected techniques and materials to their limits. Often referred to as having a natural aesthetic, my works use various media, most often paint, textiles and photography. Lisa J. Rick AMOR (1948- ) Born Frankston, Victoria After completing a Certificate of Art at the Caulfield Institute of Art in 1865 Rick Amor studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne from 1966 to 1968. Amor has held over 60 solo exhibitions, and has worked in Barcelona, New York and London. In 1999 Rick Amor became the first official Australian war artist since the Vietnam War. He was appointed by the Australian War Memorial to document the devastated land in East Timor, and the reconstruction efforts of peacekeepers. Professor David Caro OAM was Chancellor of the University of Ballarat for two terms, between 1998 and 2004. His contributions to academia and science have recognised on a national and international global scale. His appointments include Officer in the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and Officer in the Order of Australia (AO). This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. This Farrand & Votey pump organ was manufactured in Detroit USA c1885. It was lovingly restored by the late Peter Frost of Tallangatta. The organ was gifted to Peter in 2000 in a state of disrepair and was not working. Peter was born in Devon, England in 1930 and completed an apprenticeship in joinery and cabinetry, specialising in ornate church and cathedral furniture. He migrated to Australia in 1957 and became a highly regarded woodwork and building science teacher as well as a Building Inspector. He was also a passionate musician. On completion of the refurbishment Peter gave the organ to his daughter at Georges Creek. Farrand & Votey started out as the Detroit Organ Co. in 1881. They started building pipe organs in 1888. Votey did pioneering work on piano players, developing the famous Pianola. However, in 1897 the company split up, Farrand remaining with the reed organs as the Farrand Organ Co., and Votey taking the pipe organ and player piano business. The Farrand Organ Co. later brought out its own piano player, the Cecilian, but went bankrupt in 1915.This organ is an example of a craftsmanship from the late 19th century and has been fully refurbished by a skilled craftsmen from the Tallangatta district near Wodonga.An upright Farrand & Votey Pump Organ which was originally manufactured in Detroit, USA. It has been fully refurbished and is in working condition. This local flower show award from 1905 together with others in the collection demonstrates the significance of such shows as a form of social activity as well as horticultural science over the decades. It is also an example of church groups being involved in the social fabric of the community and activities that embraced all segments of the community of different religious persuasions as the certificate was awarded to Michael Taffe, a Roman Catholic in a Church of England enclave. The Girls' Friendly Society founded in England in 1875 was an Anglican Church group which formed to give maids and female domestic staff spiritual guidance and social activities for their days off. The first local Australian branch was formed in Adelaide in 1879 with branches being established in Ballarat from the 1880s. Other certificates from 1899 to the 1930s in this collection of Taffe awards come from a range of faiths and community groups. This award is one of a family collection from the nineteenth century through to the twenty-first century further demonstrating horticultural enthusiasts exhibition participation across generations.This certificate evidences one of the activities of the Girls Friendly Society St Paul's Branch in a community event that embraced the local community. The Advertiser was a local paper, first printed as a weekly in 1855, and then as a daily in 1857. It continues to be printed today, albeit in a different form. The Advertiser was launched by architect Francis Hodgson Nixon with assistance from businessman John Henry Gray, and newspaperman Richard Warren. Warren was sole owner from 1860 until his death in 1906, and it responsible for much of the paper’s success. Its goals included coverage of local events, as well as of global news, and the promotion of economic liberty, arts, and sciences. Beyond these initial goals, the Advertiser was instrumental in local politics, particularly Beechworth’s association with conservatism and constitutionalism in the 1860s and 1870s. Numerous other papers sprung up to contest the Advertiser’s hold during the latter half of the nineteenth-century, but none were able to completely oust it from its post. As well as representing a key chapter in Beechworth’s history, the Advertiser can be used as a key source for the stories and figures of historic Beechworth. He eventually settled in Ringwood as the original purchaser of Crown Allotment 32, Section C, where he built his own home in 1888 and became well known locally "for his fine building work and stone masonry." ... "In his retirement, Charles Medew experimented with model helicopters. About 1910, at the age of 80 years, he was able to raise these helicopters to such a point of efficiency that, just with an elastic wound propeller, when released they could fly upwards to the height of the large oak trees." ... "(Also) In 1910, Charles obtained plans and made a model of the Wright Brothers' biplane entirely of wood, with laminated wood propeller and driven by twisted elastic bands." The Victorian Naturalist is a bimonthly scientific journal covering natural history, especially of Australia. It is published by the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria and is received as part of the membership subscription of that club. From 1881, club proceedings and papers had been published in the Southern Science Record and Magazine of Natural History before the first issue of The Victorian Naturalist appeared in January 1884. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research articles, research reports, "Naturalist Notes", and book reviews. The journal was published monthly until 1976, since then it has been published bimonthly. In that period several special issues have been published. These covered particular natural history topics or significant centenaries: of the club (1980), the death of Ferdinand von Mueller (1996), and the establishment of Wilsons Promontory National Park and Mount Buffalo National Park (1998). The journal was abstracted and indexed by Scopus in 1980 and 1984 and from 2008 to 2014. In 2001 there was a special issue on Sir Frederick McCoy, KCMG who was the first president of the club. Sir Frederick was an Irish paleontologist, zoologist, and museum administrator, active in Australia. He is noted for founding the Botanic Garden of the University of Melbourne in 1856.A journal that is still in publication today from it’s original inception in 1881 as part of a membership subscription to the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria. "Potential blockage in the Fallopian tubes was assessed using this apparatus. It was developed by American gynaecologist Isidor Clinton Rubin (1883-1958). It blows carbon dioxide, via a cannula, into the uterus. The ease with which gas escaped through the Fallopian tubes was reflected by pressure changes on an instrument called a manometer. Blockage of the tubes is often due to previous infection or surgery. It is a common cause of infertility. Rubin’s test formed a standard part of infertility investigations for many years.
