Document, Swintons certificate of Employment as an Improver, Mid 20th C
This certificate would have been used in the Warrnambool business of Swintons Pty Ltd. in the 20th century. It is a certificate that, when filled in, would have been given to anyone who had worked for some time as an unapprenticed tradesman’s assistant. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool district, erecting many buildings, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street, Warrnambool, selling groceries, china, glassware and hardware. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Wangoom, Cudgee, Nullawarre, South Warrnambool and West Warrnambool. After William Swinton’s death his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split, with George Swinton and Sons selling clothing, furnishings and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling hardware, seeds and produce. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This certificate is of minor interest as an example of a form used by businesses such as Swintons Pty Ltd to give to employees leaving the business. The current Swinton business in Timor Street, Warrnambool is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the name Swinton associated with Timor Street businesses for 152 years, it is amongst the oldest family businesses in Australia. This is a sheet of buff-coloured paper with printed black lines and printed headings. The sheet is unused and slightly bent. ‘Certificate of Employment as an Improver’ swinton, history of warrnambool, warrnambool -

Container - Artists' Book, Re_Designed / Solid, Liquid Gas, 2000
Promotional catalogue of third year, University of Ballarat, Bachelor of Visual Arts (Graphic Design / Multimedia) graduating student work, 2000. Custom designed plastic pack containing 20 sheets of recycled printed and overprinted student works, plus a CD Rom. The contents are representative of multiple variations across packs. The clear polypropylene pack is printed in yellow and a clear varnish. The original (1997) works are offset printed in black and silver, the overprint (2000) works are in full, four process colour. CD Rom printed two colours (yellow and very dark teal) single sided. Refer item 29168.1 for screen captures from this CD Rom. Third year, Bachelor of Visual Arts (Graphic Design / Multimedia) graduating class promotional pack. Students responded to the concept of "past, present and future". These new works (year 2000) were then overprinted onto unbound sheets of the 1997 graduating student project "Silver Screen" to create entirely different pieces to "challenge the conventional boundaries of the printed image" and elicit "environmental awareness". As such, each pack contained different combinations of original (silver and black) and overprint (full colour) designs. Flyer - Warrnambool Exhibition Notices (2), Charles Cramer, President of Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute, 1879
These two flyers concern the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute Exhibition of Arts and Manufactures held in the Orderly Room over eight days in 1879-1880. The exhibition aimed to encourage local industries and to stimulate young people to manufacture and exhibit specimens of their skills in the various industries and arts. The admission was one shilling for adults and half price for children under 14. The exhibition was not very profitable with only seven pounds going into the Mechanics' Institute funds. These two flyers are of some interest as mementoes of a minor exhibition of arts and manufactures held in Warrnambool in 1879-1880.1 a single sheet of paper with black printing on a faded pink background .2 a single sheet of paper with black printing pasted on a piece of lightweight cardboard. Functional object - Cafe Food Order Pad, Nick Maroniti, Warrnambool, 1960s
This pad comes from the Palais Cafe in Koroit Street Warrnambool and has been used as a docket pad to put in details of the items provided to customers, the number of customers, the name of the server and the total amount of the bill. The name of the Palais Cafe presumably came from its situation in Koroit Street near the Palais de Danse hall (no longer existing) in the old Oddfellows Hall. There have been several different proprietors of the Palais Cafe over its operating years but this docket pad comes from the time when Nick Maroniti and a succession of partners, including Arthur Sycopoulis, ran the cafe from 1950 to 1973. There is no Palais Cafe in Warrnambool today. This pad is an interesting memento of one of Warrnambool's best-known cafes of the past. This is a cardboard-backed pad of sheets of paper stapled together. The sheets have blue printing and blue ruled lines. Several of the sheets have been used and torn off at the top of the pad.Palais Cafepalais cafe warrnambool, warrnambool cafes -
