Tool - Gold-miner's Pick, Ballarat c 1920, c1920
This gold miner's pick from the Ballarat Goldfields c 1920 was donated by Mr David Hopcraft, a dealer at the Arkuna Market Berwick, Victoria in December 2010. When Gold was discovered in Victoria c1853 most of the labourers and some landowners left the market gardens and farms to try their luck on the goldfields. Local Blacksmiths made picks similar to this one for them. There was a great shortage of labour in Melbourne and at the same time, due to the huge influx of people lured by the Gold, there was an increased demand for food. The market gardeners were getting very good prices for their produce and many increased their wealth considerably and many of these tenant farmers were able to purchase their blocks of land and live a profitable life. There was such a shortage of labour that J.B.Were applied for Irish immigrants to work the farms. This pick is an example of the hand made tools many pioneers took with them when they abandoned their farms and market gardens in the District of Brighton to try their luck at prospecting when gold was discovered in Ballarat and Bendigo c1853. Some were successful , most were not and retuned again to the hard life of farming. A forged steel pick with a wooden handle. The steel pick-head was hand-forged by a blacksmith. Book, Golden Days on the Caledonian Diggings: the diaries of Thomas Young of Kangaroo Ground, Panton Hill and Christmas Hills, compiled by Mick Woiwod, 2005
The original diaries, (1859-1866,1895-1900) of Thomas Young discovered by a Young descendant have been transcribed with the author adding his own research and historical photographs. The diary sheds light on the lives of prospectors who worked the Caledonian goldfields in the 1860s, including St Andrews and Smiths Gully. Thomas Young, migrated from Scotland and moved to the goldfields in 1858. He carted ore by horse and dray from mines around St Andrews to crushers in Panton Hill and Smiths Gully. He later became a baker. He and his wife Bridget had eleven children. He later settled at Christmas Hills establishing the local store and school. program, The Coolgardie Water Supply, 1903
This program belonged to Dr James Kerr. Conceived by Engineer-in-Chief C.Y. O’Connor and completed in 1903, the Coolgardie Goldfields Water Supply Scheme comprised a reservoir on the Helena River, eight steam-driven pumping stations and 566 kilometres of steel pipeline supplying 23,000 kilolitres of water daily to the arid goldfields of Western Australia. The project was officially opened by Sir John and Lady Forrest in January 1903. "Great pomp and ceremony heralded the arrival of water and the opening of the Scheme. Clean, fresh water could now be easily obtained in some of Australia's harshest country. However, this victory came at a great cost. The stress of the bold project was too much for O’Connor, who, after enduring endless criticism, took his life on 10 March 1902, before the Scheme was completed." - Western Australian Museum : The Coolgardie Goldfields Water Supply Scheme was an ambitious engineering feat because at the time water had never been lifted so high nor pumped so far (about 560 km). The Scheme, which pumps water from the better-watered coastal area, operates to this day. This item is associated with an historic event in the history of opening up arid areas of Australia to settlement. The item is associated with Dr James Kerr, the first doctor to settle in Orbost.A souvenir program from the opening of the works of the Coolgardie Water Supply. It has a maroon cover with gold print. Smith Letters
John Smith was a carpenter and/or timber merchant who emigrated from England to Australia. He settled in Launceston in 1834-6. In 1836 he married Susannah (of Birmingham, nee Bradney/Bradbury, daughter of a gunsmith). Their first child was born in Launceston in 1837 (records in Wesleyan Church). They set out to try the Californian goldfields but at Tahiti they received such bad news about the Californian goldfields that they changed their minds and returned to Port Phillip. Apparently, John Smith's nephew George died of T.B. less than a year after arriving at Tarnagulla. John Smith, Susannah and two of their 9+ children are buried in St Kilda Cemetery (Wesleyan sector). They were lifelong members of the Wesleyan Church. A John Smith, carpenter was listed as being a business in Wellington St, St Kilda 1856-1860. Donald Clark Collection.Eleven photocopied pages. Four pages are a letter (date circa 1990s) from S.A.S. Smith of England to Lorna Goltz of the Tarnagulla Gold n Rocks Museum. It explains the context of some accompanying photocopied historical letters. All the letters relate to S.A.S. Smith's ancestors who lived in Tarnagulla for a time. The photocopies are of: 1) Letter dated 15th April 1857, written and sent from St Kilda by John Smith 2) Letter dated October 24th, 1866, written and sent from Tarnagulla by John Smith 3) Letter dated October 17, 1866 written and sent from Tarnagulla by George, nephew of John Smith. -

Photograph - Aerial shots of parts of Bendigo 1934, 1934
AERIAL SHOTS OF PARTS OF BENDIGO 1934 Catalogue No.10584 This document contains scans of a unique set of aerial photographs that were taken over the City of Bendigo on Friday 12th January 1934, at about midday. The photographs were commissioned by Bendigo Mines Limited during their exploration and mining program designed to revitalize the Bendigo Goldfield. The photographs were given to the Victorian Mines Department sometime in the 1950s. The photographs were taken at a relatively low level of about 4000 feet. This gives a very detailed picture of Bendigo as it was in the 1930s. The photos cover the City Centre and are mainly of the goldfields on the south side of the city; the extent of which covers approximately the four corners of Myers Flat, Maiden Gully, Mandurang and One Tree Hill. Streets, roads and places of interest have been identified as best as possible in December 2023. There are 44 maps, and each references the adjoining maps.Typed Notes with CD The CD is one of two and contains a set of 46 images: The folder named "High_Resolution_800dpi" contains the original digital files that were produced by scanning the photographic prints (About A3 size) at 800 dpi using a high quality, large pformat, roll scanner. These files may be too large for some computers. A second CD contains a direstory called "Low_Resolution_300dep" The images in the folder names "Low_Reolution_300dpr" have a lower resolution (300 dpi) and have been rotated 90 degrees clockwise so that the Northern margin of each image is a the top of the screen. The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, c1900
This photograph shows a small timber house in Wooragee. In 1855, the Ovens district made a shift towards farming development that included the sales of land in the Wooragee Valley. This shift came because of miner's demands and concern about stabilising the area around the goldfield. Continual migration needed to be supported, unlucky diggers needed alternative employment, and there was a lack of affordable fresh produce available on the goldfields. Initially, the cost of land in areas like Wooragee was prohibitive, and miners chose to squat rather than overpay for poor land. Throughout the 1850s and 1860s, land reform was a key topic for miners and politicians, as they attempted to improve land access and protect financial interests. This photograph is an example of rural development in the Wooragee area, showing the cottage, tents, and garden beds. While the date is unknown, the image nevertheless links us to the 1850s-1860s story of rural development in Indigo Shire. Black and white rectangular photo, copy of original, printed on paper. wooragee, timber, timber cottage, corrugated iron, cottage, housing, tents, gardening, farming, farming and agriculture, construction, garden bed, flowers, verandah, squatting, tent, field -
The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph
In this image a Colt 1855 Revolving Rifle is placed upon a sign detailing an £8,000 reward for robbery and murder. Writing on the rear of the photograph identifies the rifle as having belonged to Joe Byrne. In colonial Victoria, the Colt brand firearm was highly popular. They began their popularity in the goldfields of the early 1850s. Individuals, particularly those coming to Victoria with prior experience in the goldfield, brought with them a means of self-defence because of the prevalence of assault and robbery on the goldfields. In the 1860s, the Colt firearm became popular among the Victorian Police force. It was decided in June 1864 by Chief Commissioner of Police, Frederick Standish that the Colt revolvers were far more practical, being of simpler construction and therefore, more easily cleaned and less dangerous than the revolvers used prior to this: the Adams and Kerr firearms. The Colt revolver remained in use in regional districts of Victoria as late as the early 1880 when they were used at the Kelly siege at Glenrowan. The £8,000 reward was issued in 1879 after the Kelly Gang committed numerous bank robberies at Euroa and Jerilderie. In the year prior, the Kelly Gang murdered three policemen at Stringybark Creek. This resulted in the creation of the “Felon’s Apprehension Act 1878” which enabled an individual, whether a part of the Police force or civilian, to shoot a declared outlaw on sight. After the bank robberies, the Police force of NSW and Victoria increased the existing reward to this £8,000 amount. This photograph is significant for what it can potentially reveal about the Kelly Gang and firearms made in this period. The rifle in the image is a Colt Revolving Rifle which was known to have been used by the Victorian Police force from the early 1850s to the late 1880s. It is also known that the Kelly Gang stole police rifles which they used to practise with and so the identification of the rifle as having belonged to Joe Byrne is of significant importance to researchers studying the firearms of the Kelly Gang. More research is needed to solidify the connection of this particular weapon to Byrne other than the handwritten note on the back of the photograph. The Burke Museum Beechworth is home to a significant collection of photographs connected to Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang. Photographs like this one are valuable for what they can potentially reveal about the Kelly Gang and the Police force during this period. Alongside the study of the other images, photographs from this collection have the ability to further expand current knowledge on this period of Australian history. There is also the capability to provide an analysis of how these firearms and Kelly memorabilia have been received in the past. It could be beneficial to undertake a close study of the use history and reception of these artefacts within the museum context.Black and white rectangular reproduced photograph printed on matte photographic paperReverse: 10268 / Joe Byrne's / Riflekelly album, ned kelly, kelly gang, joe byrne, rewards, outlaw, criminals, bushrangers, colt, police, firearm, beechworth, reward, felon's apprehension act 1878, 1880, glenrowan, colt revolver, revolving rifle, 8000 pound reward, jerilderie, euroa, beechworth goldfield -
