The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. In 1977 8/13 VMR Regiment was reduced to an independent squadron A Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles and in 1991 was linked with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse forming the VMR Squadron of that regiment.One of a collection of photographic portraits of Commanding Officers and Officers Commanding of the regiment/independent squadron from its inception in 1947 to its linking with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse in 1991. The Inverness was a well boat built in Port Fairy 1938 by K.N. Lacco and Sons for Johnny McDonald who owned and operated her until about 1942 when she was taken by the armed forces. In 1946 after the 1939-1945 War she was bought in Sydney by Tommy Davis, Jim 'Jumbo' Terjeson and Peter 'Runt' Terjeson. One of the first large goldfield meetings was at Castlemaine in 1851. After the extraordinary success of the Mt Alexander Diggings the Government issued a proclamation, raising the licence fee from thirty shillings to three pounds. As soon as these intentions became known a public meeting of miners was held. For miles around work ceased, with diggers travelling as far as Bendigo to attend the meeting. It is estimated that around 18,000 people attended the meeting. The notes with the engraving state The trees in this locality are chiefly Stringybark; some of them are peeled of their covering, as many persons prefer erecting bark huts to living in a comfortless tent. The various groups, and costumes of the men, are characteristic of our gold digging community. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Students attended Sunday School classes at the Kergunyah Presbyterian Church. Sunday school was held in a little 16 foot square wooden building which came from Rocky Valley after it was no longer needed there. Ewen Wallace's father initiated and organised the move. C2011 the building was knocked down because of white ants. The Napoleon (BML) gold mine (1932) was located beside McDougall Road, Golden Gully, between Martin and Hattam Street. It had a depth of 921 feet. It was one of the latest and most lavish of Bendigo's mines. Plant and equipment were electrically driven. The four-compartment shaft, extra large by goldfield's standards, measured 17 feet 6 inches by 5 feet 2 inches and was cement lined below 900 feet instead of being red gum boxed as was the usual practice. The workshop was equipped to carry out all repairs for the equally lavish BML mines on the Nell Gwynne and Carshalton reefs. These two photographs of a contingent from the Army Survey Regiment lowering the Australian flag were taken on Australia Day in Kerang, Victoria on the 26th of January 1996. Most units of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) provide contingents to regional towns in their local area to assist in commemoration ceremonies on days of national significance, such as Australia Day, ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. This was most likely one of the last occasions before the closure of the Army Survey Regiment. From Eltham Montmorency Uniting Church, History http://www.elthammontmorencyuca.org/history/ In 1914 a small group of Presbyterians living on 'The Montmorency Estate', which had been established when the railway was extended to Eltham several years before, began meeting for worship in the Rattray Rd home of Robert Sharpe. Two years later a small weatherboard church, administered from Scots Church, Heidelberg, was built on land donated by Mr. Sharpe. In 1931 this building was moved to the corner of Rattray Road and Mountain View Roads.
