Barry Walsh The Armour “From the Lives of the Kelly Gang” is a comprehensive series of works. It captures the very emotion and spirit that evolved during Barry’s sensitive study of the persecution and injustices imposed upon common people by British Authority during the early Australian colonial days. “The Lives of the Kelly Gang” is the story of four very highly spirited young Australian men who could have been accredited to great things had they not settled on the wrong side of the law. Actions of the four boys surrounding the bank robberies led me to believe they were quite gentlemanly, incredibly cunning and humorous with a high respect for women. But the shootings at Stringy Bark Creek sealed their fate. Relishing in the fact that they had become famous for their pursuits enjoying the notoriety and sharing the money they stole with everybody around them, appearing very carefree and talented, to some extent I found empathy with their plight. Their evangelistic crusade can only be viewed as misguided. However, the story is still relevant to youth today. Guns are beautiful instruments which symbolize authority, but have enormous consequences when emotions rule their control. The cormorant weaving was depicted through the traditional weaving method of the blanket stitch of the Yorta Yorta people. As birds are very significant and important in Aboriginal culture, the cormorant was created to represent the meaning of Wangaratta for the local people and wider community. The weaving is an extension of my series of works which represent wildlife along the waterways, particularly in the North East of Victoria and within my tribal homelands. In 2001 I was taught to weave at a weaving workshop held at Gas Works in Port Melbourne by old aunties from Victoria and South Australia which included Yvonne Koolmatrie. A body of my weaving works, which include turtles and spirits, is held at the National Gallery of Victoria. 12 apostles I researched daily temperatures taken from the Wangaratta aerodrome station -#82138- when it first operated in mid May 1987. This year is significant as the Wangaratta Art Gallery also opened in 1987. Noting the daily minimum and maximum temperatures, I drew a graph to show this information for each month on a plywood block forward for 12 months. On the reverse of each plywood block, I collected and drew a graph of the daily minimum and maximum from May 2014 backwards for 12 months. Using a steel nibbed pen with silver ink directly on the plywood block, the drawing relates the temperatures to the shape of the landscape.
