Charcoal irons followed the use of flat irons when the base was made into a box in which to put charcoal which would keep the iron hotter for a longer time.This item is an example of a domestic appliance in common usage before the advent of electricity.Large black ornate charcoal iron with a chimney on the top. It has an ornate metal hand protector. It has a hollow base into which charcoal is placed. Originally used in metallurgy. It was probably acquired c1900. Initially it was equipped with carbon arc light source. Later, in the mid-sixties electric filament light was installed by Lindsay Pattenden, lecturer in Metallurgy.A microscope designed for examining prepared surfaces of opaque objects, e.g. polished metal alloy specimens placed on top of the viewing stage. Equipped with a light source and with two viewing posts, one which is designed for a camera. The accessory box (.2) is a polished timber box with drawers which hold lenses and other accessories.
