There are two categories of cutting edge on broad axes and both are used for shaping logs by hewing. 1. Single bevel axe - one side is flat and the other side bevelled, also called a side axe. The handle may curve away from the flat side to allow an optimal stance. The flat blade but can only be worked from one direction and is right-handed or left-handed. 2. Double bevel axe - both sides are bevelled and produces a scalloped cut. The axe has a straight handle and can be swung with either side against the wood. Cutlery Set, Grosvenor, c. 2000s
This cutlery set mirrors older examples held in the collection (K04) and may have been manufactured as recently as the 2000s. The manufacturer's name "GROSVENOR" and the defence symbol of the broad arrow indicates that the equipment was produced by an external company. This set is representative of a typical set issued to contemporary servicemen and women and as such, has social significance as a ubiquitous relic of service. The set has strong interpretive capacity, being able to draw on issues of equipment, food, technological shifts over time. The set also represents a shift in defence equipment production from government-run manufacturing, with the Australian Government Clothing Factory and Australian Defence Apparel etc., to outsourced contracted production with existing manufacturers such as Grosvenor, an established cutlery manufacturing company.Three piece fork, knife and spoon set held together by a flat headed pin on the knife handle which clips into corresponding holes on fork and knife handles. Handles are curved (concave) in centre. Functional object - Hinge, prior to 1932
This decorative hinge was recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Casino (1882 – 1932) in 1969. It is one of the shipwreck artefacts in the John Chance Collection. The hinge has round sections on the back that could have been mounting points. The coastal trader SS Casino (1882–1932) had a run of almost 50 years along the coast of Western Victoria. She traded goods and food as well as carrying passengers from port to port on her many voyages. This vase may have been included in her cargo or could have been amongst the personal luggage of the people on board. The hinge is historically significant as an example of hardware existing in Victoria the 1930s or even earlier. The hinge is also an example of artefacts recovered from a Victorian shipwreck in the 1960s. It was recovered by John Chance, a diver from the wreck of the S.S. Casino in the 1960s-70s. Items that come from several wrecks along Victoria's coast have since been donated to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village’s museum collection by his family, illustrating this item’s level of historical value. The hinge has significance because of its association with the S.S. Casino, which played an historical role in Western Victoria, providing transport, communication and trade along the coast between Melbourne and Portland in the late 19th and the early 20th century, visiting the ports at Apollo Bay, Warrnambool and Belfast (Port Fairy). The S.S. Casino was the only regular trader with normal passenger accommodation along the West Coast and the only Western District steamship that was in service between 1854 and 1939, and to be represented in the Victorian Heritage Shipwreck register, and to have been wrecked in the Western District, and to have the wreck located, and to be accessible to divers. The wreck of the S.S. Casino, and its associated relics, is considered an important part of Victorian and Australian cultural heritage and is now protected as a Historic Shipwreck under State and Commonwealth Law in the Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks Act (1976). Hinge, arrow shaped, cast iron, decorative design. Hinge is wide at one end and tapers to a point at the other end. The top surface is textured with the design. The underside is flat. The metal is very fragile.flagstaff hill, warrnambool, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, s.s. casino, john chance, west coast trader, apollo bay, captain middleton, hinge, hardware -

Photograph - Friends of the Park float, Port Melbourne Festival, Pat Grainger, Feb 1989
This float was created by members of Friends of the Park, a group formed in 1987 against government proposals to turn the railway and reservation into a grand boulevard to service the proposed Sandridge City 'bayside' development. Members worked for months to make the decorations, added to a trailer. During the festival procession sausages were BBQ'd on the trailer and handed out to the crowd. On arrival at Murphy's Reserve all floats were put out of sight, and few saw the results of their efforts. One of 16 colour photos of Friends of the Park float for the February 1989 Port Melbourne Festival: Preparations for the procession forming by the Raglan Street flats - Jan Fly, Andrea Ellis and Marilyn Tullochcelebrations fetes and exhibitions, public action campaigns, jan fly, andrea ellis, marilyn tulloch, friends of the park, port melbourne festival -
