Made by Mrs Noel (Lizzie) Morton, the donor's mother on their farm "Wanera" at Benjeroop on the Murray River. It was stitched with a treadle machine. Her sister Flora MacDonald did the running stitch and provided the silk backing. The squares were sent as samples from a firm called "Fred Hesse" who advertised in the Melbourne papers "Be smart and dressy In a suit by Fred Hesse". The buyer chose a sample and then sent it back with measurements and received a "mail order" suit.A small knee rug made from suiting samples machine stitched together. She was nearing the end of her voyage, close inshore off Cape Otway at Curdies Inlet (now called Schomberg Reef), east of Peterborough and 150 miles westward of Melbourne. When the wind suddenly dropped the ship drifted onto an uncharted reef and became stuck fast. There was no loss of life ans all the passengers, crew and mails were taken off by a passing coastal steamer, the Queen, out of Port Fairy the following morning. The passengers' luggage and some of the cargo was rescued, but the weather worsened and work was abandoned and cargo littered the beach. The wreck was sold for salvage to local merchants: two were drowned in attempts to reach her. It became a popular wreck site for diving and over 100 relics have been handed in. The bell of the ship is in the Warrnambool Museum, southern Victoria. One of several illustrated envelopes, without letter, sketched by soldier/s during the second world war and sent to Mrs McDonald of WangarattaVictoria's 2/24th Infantry Battalion was raised in Wangaratta in July 1940. They were welcomed with open arms by the local community as they rapidly built up their numbers. The people of Wangaratta adopted the Battalion and they became known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. Many of the soldiers maintained life long friendships with the people of Wangaratta. They were welcomed with open arms by the local community as they rapidly built up their numbers. The people of Wangaratta adopted the Battalion and they became known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. Many of the soldiers maintained life long friendships with the people of Wangaratta.
