The first meeting of the 1st Bendigo Guides was held by Miss Merle Bush on the 22nd of August 1922 in the St Paul' School Room. Twelve girls were present. Miss Bush was given permission to open the Company by Miss R. This is a set of 12 photographs of contractors removing a vehicle from the lake at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo in September 1986. The Ford XB panel van belonging to WO2 Ted Burgess rolled down the embankment during the night from the SGTs Mess carpark. Despite written off by the insurance company, the panel van was remarkably restored by Ted to roadworthy condition and driven in to Fortuna with a shark’s fin mounted on its roof. This gown dated to c. 1910-1910Long sleeved full length dressing gown of cream coloured satin. Front opening with three passementerie buttons at centre front with fabric ties at waist (60cm). Ties split into two parts at halfway point Each tie is tied at the end with a thin cord and finished with two tassels with cord covered beads. Garment, including long sleeves, is fully lined with cream coloured satin with decorative stitching pattern.Rounded neckline at back with stand up collar (5cm) decorated with lace. Lace fabric panel across shoulders at front and back. Both sides of front opening have a border (7cm) from shoulder to hem. Neckline dips to V shape above waist. Panels decorated with piping. Front panels lined with cream coloured embroidered lace netting to top button. A different patterned lace lines the top part of the opening panels and extends across the neckline at the back.Two hanging loops attached inside shoulders at top of sleeves. Long sleeves of cream coloured lace fabric with double layer of satin lining. Each sleeve has a panel of decorative fabric from the top of the shoulder to the wrist (same decorative fabric as that used for border of front opening). Satin cuff (12 cm) scalloped edge above wrist. Inside cuff edge of sleeve is lined with lace fabric with a row of pleated net inserted at hemline at wrist. A Legacy torch emblem painted on a wooden panel mounted on a stick for carrying in demonstrations or parades. It is seen in some photos of annual demonstrations with the children marching behind it. In particular one at the Glasshouse in 1961. Clothing. Cotton crotched edging 6 cms wide. What appears to be the two armhole edgings - 6 cms wide, are joined by what may have been yoke inserts, or neckline edging. However the width of this panel -38 cms, does seem extremely wide. This joining panel-all crocheted in one piece, has an opening edge at what was possibly the back of the garment, Circular motifs, 2.5 cm in diameter, have plain border on the inner edge, and a more decorative edging, 2.5 cm wide on the outer edge. Clothing. Full length black silk-satin skirt, with a 4-pleat cummerbund waist sash - 10 cms deep. Two x 10 cm wide ''falls'' of satin, angled at the lower edge fall from the plackett left side, and are 51 cm long and 63 cm long at their peak. Two panels of the skirt fabric, 81 cm long and 23 cm wide are attached from the waistline at the centre front and centre back. Black fabric has a geometric type all-over silk embroidered pattern, woven into the fabric. Three panels of fabric make up the skirt, with a lower rounded panel at the hemline, to complete the circular skirt. Above the hemline, two bands 0f plain satin fabric, approximately three cms wide, are stitched in overlapping semi-circles, approximately six cms apart. Ends of these strips are cut to a point, and finished with a tiny black, glistening button. Waistline has a 2.5cm band, fastened with metal hook and eyes. Four-piece wedding outfit comprising bodice, belt, skirt and separate train all made of cream figured wool. The bodice has a centre front ruched panel, stand collar and a fitted two-piece sleeve with full gathered head. It is trimmed with cream-coloured beading with pearl drops. The bodice has seven interior bones and is fastened with metal hooks and hand sewn eyelets which are concealed under the front panel. A separate pleated belt fastens centre back. This item was made by Mrs Whiteman and worn by her daughter Marjorie Burton. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. In England she did office work – typing, shorthand and secretarial work - in accountants’ offices and also trained as a comptometrist with Burroughs in London. She came from a middle-class, working, church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who made manyof Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. Marjorie was married in 1938 to a salesman who later became a mechanic in the R.A.F. during WW11. This item is an example of a home-made item of clothing and reflects the needlework skills of women in the first half of the twentieth century.A short white linen petticoat opening at the back with 2 metal hooks and eyes. The waist has threaded elastic. Sewn to the top are two long tapes fastened with safety pins - probably for hanging. This apron is similar to aprons were made for use during war times, perhaps with Red Cross. It was donated along with other well kept items of women's clothing. The clothing once belonged to members of a family who migrated from Faversham, Kent, England to Sydney, Australia in the late 19th - early 20th century and was passed down through the family.
