Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade was formed in 1863. The first fire engine house was in Liebig Street and carters were required to carry water to fire scenes. In 1889 the Council built a new Fire Station on Liebig Street and Warrnambool hosted its own Annual Demonstration in 1894. In 1891 the volunteer brigade became part of the Country Fire Brigade. The Fire Station relocated to Raglan Parade in 1915 and then to Timor Street in 1961. In 1989 the Brigade moved back to Raglan Parade. This booklet is a memento of the State Championships that were held in Warrnambool to mark 150 years of community service to Warrnambool by the Warrnambool Fire Brigade. Sarah ANDERSON (1984- ) Born Ararat, Victoria Sarah Anderson is a ceramic artist currently completing her tertiary education at Federation University, and upon completion intends to study for a post-graduate teaching qualification. Influences on Sarah’s work range greatly, from historical Mexican tilework to delicate pinched porcelain sculpture. Barbara Hepworth, Constantin Brancusi and Jun Kaneko continue to be great sources of inspiration for Sarah’s final year of studies, for their challenging looks at shape, form and colour in their ceramic work. Sarah’s current ceramic practice involves exploring organic shapes in brightly coloured finishes. At once the shapes are earthy and vaguely figurative, an exploration of three dimensional shape and how our minds seek to align them with familiar forms. Her colour treatments are designed to create a dichotomy between shape and colour, inviting the viewer to apply their own meaning to the works. In future, Sarah hopes to combine her love for art history and education with her art practice in a fulfilling career. Sarah Anderson completed a Bachelor Visual Arts (Ceramics) at the Federation University Arts Acadamy in 2017. Three earthernware sculptures with mid-fired underglaze treatment. This model of knapsack sprayer was used for both agricultural and firefighting purposes throughout Australia. The manufacturer, A. Simpson & Son who had a long history as a prominent metals manufacturer in Adelaide, South Australia. Alfred Simpson arrived in South Australia in 1849 and by the mid 1950s had established himself as a tinsmith. His son, also Alfred, joined the business in 1864. By the time of Alfred senior's death in 1891, A. Simpson and Son had the largest metal manufacturing plant in Australia. The business was incorporated in 1910, with Alfred as chairman, and his sons Allen and Frederick as directors. During World War I the company also manufactured munitions as well as ordnance. In the 1920s the company expanded into the production of tools for use in agriculture and in the 1940s they began the manufacture of whitegoods. In 1963 A. Simpson and Son merged with Pope Industries to form Simpson Pope Holdings.This item is representative of agricultural equipment used throughout Australia by a major Australian manufacturer. They were used extensively in the Wodonga district. A Backpack Sprayer unit made from galvanised iron used for agricultural and fire-fighting purposes.
