On 12 August 1940, SS Orduna sailed from Liverpool with a privately organised party of 16 children from Belmont Preparatory school, Hassocks Sussex to Nassau. It was part of a wider British Government children's evacuation program during World War II, when the prospect of imminent invasion threatened Britain. In 1941 with the need for military transport in the Second World War, she was put into service by the British government as a troopship. Another task during the Second World War was that of an evacuation transport. In 1945 the Orduna brought back Prisoners of War and internees from the Far East. A memorial to the ships involved in the repatriation was unveiled on the Liverpool waterfront on 15 October 2011. Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This item is significant because it documents the wide range of actions and responsibilities undertaken by the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee.A Circular from the Management Committee prior to the 1967 season. This photograph was taken on the Portico of the Soldiers Memeorial Institute Pall Mall Bendigo. The man in the photo is "William James Norman Smart" known by all as Norm. He was a legend in Bendigo RSL Appeals having raised near $250,000.00 over the years. His selling spot was Coles Central where he sat for up to a fortnight each Appeal, ANZAC and Poppy. He had a loyal clientele who only bought their tokens from Norm. On ANZAC day especially he would come into the kitchen at the Soldiers Memorial about 5.00am and sort his tray out while others there were making the Rum and Coffee. He would then go out and walk among the people before the Dawn Service selling tokens. Norm was still selling tokens after he turned 90 years. he retired from all Volunteer work in the Bendigo RSL in August 2015. Refer Cat No 8131.2P for Norms RSL history. It provides a support network and community for veterans and their families. This painting was presented to the St Vincent's civilian medical team by the people of An Giang Province, Vietnam, in recognition of their work in the area. St Vincent's sent four civilian clinical teams to Long Xuyen, South Vietnam, 1965 - 1966 as part of an aid program administered by the Australian Department of External Affairs to assist Vietnamese medical and paramedical personnel and provide medical aid to everyone who needed it. The service of the Australian civilian teams who went to Vietnam 1964 - 1972 was recognised with a special plaque within the grounds of the Australian War Memorial in October 2008. This item has historical significance because it is a memento of the hospital's involvement in a nationally significant wartime aid program to South Vietnam. Schlink Pass near Guthega in the Snowy Mountains is also named in his honour. Charlie Ryan is the boy on the left. Memorial plaque or death penny, medals and photograph of Private Percy Albert TIPPETT 483 who served with the 6th Battalion AIF and was wounded on the 25/4/15 during the initial landing at Gallipoli and died on 28/4/1915.Percy, aged 19, was one of the first young men from Wangaratta to enlist in the First AIF, Service No. 483. He was posted to the 6th Infantry Battalion on 19th October 1914 and sailed from Melbourne on HMAT Hororata. On 25th April 1915, Percy was in the initial landings at Gallipoli when he was seriously wounded. He was retrieved and taken to a transport ship for medical attention but unfortunately did not respond to treatment and died from his wounds on 28th April 1915. One of several illustrated envelopes, without letter, sketched by soldier/s during the second world war and sent to Mrs McDonald of WangarattaVictoria's 2/24th Infantry Battalion was raised in Wangaratta in July 1940. They were welcomed with open arms by the local community as they rapidly built up their numbers. The people of Wangaratta adopted the Battalion and they became known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. Many of the soldiers maintained life long friendships with the people of Wangaratta.
