This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. One of a collection of over 400 photographs in an album commenced in 1960 and presented to the Phillip Island & Westernport Historical Society by the Shire of Phillip Island. A tragedy occurred at the McHaffie home in 1868. When a friend of John McHaffie, Captain Grossard, was accidentally shot when a fellow guest on the verandah of the homestead mishandled a gun during preparations for a hunt. Captain Grossard's dying wish was that he should be buried on a cliff near the sea. His lonely grave is still to be seen at the end of Grossard Point Road. This inscription appears on the headstone: "Sacred to the memory of William Phillip Grossard, formerly of Bideford, Devonshire, many years captain in the Merchant Service, who was killed by accidental discharge of a gun during a visit to Phillip Island, the 17th December, 1868. Bend of Islands is named after a group of small islands at a bend of the Yarra River near Watsons Creek. It is located near the town of Kangaroo Ground. The locationn was a long time favourite spot for locals and visitors to fish and swim in the river. This is one of a series of four photographs that depict a mainly young group of people recreating in the area, particularly enjoying horse riding. Possibly weekend campers. Photos taken about 1926-1928. In 1938 "The Argus" advertised weekend cabins at the Bend of Islands estate 5-are Yarra Yarra frontage in the Christmas Hills Gorge ideal for weekend cabins. The M.B. John Building (Building K), a three storey, face red brick, restrained Late Twentieth Century International styled building with an elongated, cuboid form (defined by the parapeted facades) that is offset by projecting exposed concrete framed, round‐arched entrance and stair wells on the east (Albert Street) elevation (the centrally located entrance breaking the brick façade with glazing). The facades are also characterised by banks of aluminium framed, horizontal ribbon windows, which wrap around the building corners. Metal shades project beyond the windows, while post‐supported bullnosed verandahs and hoods and projecting concrete stairs are other features. On the west elevation, the cuboid façade is punctuated by projecting curved concrete and glazed, elongated bays at first floor level. House has three chimneys bull nose verandah with cast iron lacework, weatherboard construction with picket fence. Albert (Bert) worked for the Lands Department and his family consisted of 4 girls oldest being Aubrey about 18, Beverley about 16, Gwenda about 14 and the baby Faye about 4. and Alberts wife Phyllis. Albert worked all over Victoria from Buchan where they lived in the Caves Residence for 6 months, in Omeo, Yackandandah, Stawell, Wangaratta and Shepperton and then Melbourne where he took on the top job of Chief Superintendent of the Lands Dept. Two colour slide of toys laid out in the verandah of Government House for a Legacy Christmas party in the 1960s. Melbourne Legacy held an annual Christmas Party for Junior Legatees and Widows at Government House for many years. Junior Legatees were given gifts. These appear to be the gifts waiting to be distributed. The exact date is not known but there are 15 slides in the same white mount which appear to be the same event (02913 - 02924). Governor Delacombe is in some the photos so they are post 1963 when he became Governor. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. "Smoker's were well-catered for at the Chalet, and Smoking Rooms in similar resort establishments were considered to be a necessary facility. A guest house in the Blue Mountains in 1905 offered the' full comforts of a refined home' with views, spacious verandahs, tennis court and smoking room. James Boyce commented on expectorating smokers in the the Chalet's public rooms and recommended the provision of spittoons." (Pg 101. Historica) PROV . "Greystanes" was originally "Hunter House" built at 57 Queen Street, Bendigo by Robert Hunter in 1882. Robert's brother William and his family lived there for almost 60 years. In 1945 the house was sold to Rex Hyett who renamed the house "Greystanes". Rex removed the original verandah and balcony and built the portico. There were several other owners before it was purchased by the Country Roads Board/ VicRoads where it was the local office for 36 years years (1958 - 1994). From the late 1990s "Greystanes" was restored by Bill and Tui Mitchell who operated it as accommodation, restaurant and reception rooms. New owners then turned it into a boutique hotel and conference centre. The current owners purchased "Greystanes" in 1910. It was renamed "Hunter House" and after extensive restorations was converted into a family home and business .Red leather covered three ring photograph album with fifty adhesive pages containing eighty nine coloured photographs, two letters and a two page printed wine list. Front of album has three gold coloured lines as a border and the spine has five horizontal sets of three gold coloured lines. The photographs are a record of the restoration of "Greystanes Manor" house including a restaurant, accommodation and reception rooms. It includes photographs of guest rooms, living rooms, kitchen areas, storage areas, fittings and furnishings, external areas, restoration works, bathrooms, gardens and staff members. The album also includes two letters of appreciation from guests who stayed at "Greystanes" and a two page wine list from the restaurant. Night time flash-lit photograph taken from under a nearby shop verandah shows W2 class tram 244 just arrived at a wet Elgar Road terminus. One passenger hurries away from the tram in the rain while others in the front saloon stand to exit. The destination sign reads "Camberwell Depot, 70", the trolley poles are you to be reset and the last of three off-side weather blinds is being lowered. An advertisement for local radio station 3AW and presenter Derryn Hinch is fixed to the side of the tram. William James Trembath (13/4/1877-27/3/1930) was a draper who lived with his wife Mary Florence (nee Ellis) ( 1877 -29/7/1932) at 521 Hargreaves Street. They had married in 1901. Black and White Photograph of the Narre Warren East shop, possibly taken 1953-1956, featuring a building at the top of a driveway. About seven cars are parked out the front of the building. The shop has a high-pitched roof, a central door, and large windows or a verandah. Under the left windows is an advertisement for Swallows ice cream. There are trees surrounding the shop. This was the first and only store in Narre Warren East. It is now a house on Wellington Road. The home and store was built by Bert Dorning, and the Dornings opened and ran the store.

This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. The house was built for Dr. Rae in 1880 following his retirement from his medical practice due to ill health. He lived there until his death. Dr. Vance then occupied it for a short time. It was bought by the sisters of St. Joseph in 1890 and formed the nucleus of St. Joseph’s Convent. It was demolished in the early years of the twentieth century, when a new two-storey brick convent was built.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph.
