It is no coincidence that the motto "Be Prepared" can be shortened to B. P. and Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scout movement, used to shorten his surname into B.-P. In the third part of Scouting for Boys Robert Baden-Powell explains the meaning of the phrase: The Scout Motto is: BE PREPARED which means you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your DUTY. The St John Ambulance Association, which was founded in 1877 in England. Its first uniformed first-aiders were founded in 1887 as the St John Ambulance Brigade. These two have since been merged into a single association. St John Ambulance now have over 40 national organisations, many of which are affiliated with Johanniter International, and over 300,000 volunteers worldwide. The Order of St John owns the brand name in most countries (with the notable exception of India, which has a St John Ambulance organisation that is unconnected to the international movement). Logos vary in different countries but always contain the eight-pointed white Maltese cross as the essential identifier. Like the Order, St John Ambulance associations accept members of all religions. Their geographic organisation differs from the Order, and they have to contend with the differing national laws, medical practices and cultures of countries. The McCormick name in farm machinery dates back to Cyrus McCormick, who produced the first successful reaper in 1831. McCormick's company was one of the pieces that eventually became International Harvester. International renamed their new 10-20 and 15-30 tractors as McCormick-Deering in 1923. Scouting started in Australia with some informal troops in Western Australia and Victoria in 1907. Scouting was established in Australia in 1908, the year the first Boy Scout training handbook Scouting for Boys was published in England. CHUMS Scout Patrols started forming in Australia in 1908 due to the circulation of CHUMS publication there. R.C. Packer and the Sunday Times in 1908 supported the formation of the League of Boy Scouts. Initially John Matchett had a grocery store in Pall Mall. In 1893, he advertised as a hay and corn dealer. When he retired to a farm in Kamarooka, the business was taken over by his son Robert Matchett (1864-1928). In 1904 the business moved to the Corner of Mitchell St., and Bath Lane. As well as a grocers this was a wine and spirit merchant. After Robert Snr. died the shop and the liquor licence was transferred to his son Robert Jnr. The Commercial Bank of Australia was established in 1866. In Bendigo it was initially in Pall Mall but in 1875 a new building was designed by Vahland and Getzschmann in the Renaissance revival style and was erected at 11 View Point. Rationing regulations for food and clothing were gazetted on 14 May 1942. Rationing was introduced to manage shortages and control civilian consumption. It aimed to curb inflation, reduce total consumer spending, and limit impending shortages of essential goods. The broad reasoning behind the introduction of rationing was to ensure the equitable distribution of food and clothing. It was also hoped that a cut on consumer spending would lead to an increase in savings, which in turn could be invested in war loans. Australians were never as short of food nor rationed as heavily as civilians in the United Kingdom. Rationing was enforced by the use of coupons and was limited to clothing, tea, sugar, butter, and meat. Australian musician and television presenter, Ray Burgess, shot to the top of Australia’s fledgling pop-rock scene following a successful appearance on television’s talent show, New Faces (the 20th century equivalent of Australian Idol). It was 1970 and Ray soon became a founding member of popular show band, Red Time, touring Australia for several years before the band was signed up as backing band to then-King of Pop, Johnny Farnham. An accomplished singer in his own right, Ray undertook a solo career in 1974 and his very first recording, ''Touch Me'', became a huge Australian hit. Mr and Mrs. Robertson were natives of Scotland, and arrived in Victoria in 1852. Mr. and Mrs. Robertson early took up land at Myers' Creek, where they carried on farming operations until the death of Catherine in 1905 and the death of Donald in 1907. The Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition, held at Bendigo from 13 November 1901 to 14 May 1902. The courts were numbered from one, or had titles like “Machinery”, “Agricultural”, “Naval & Military Court” and “Art”. The female visitors to the Exhibition were able to view exhibits deemed suitable for the fairer sex and located within their own “Women’s Court”. There were exhibits such as “Parasols & Umbrellas”, cotton and haberdashery from Manchester and Staffordshire, “Corsets & Embroideries” from Paris. The most valuable exhibits were mining machinery such as Taylor Horsfield’s £850 “Air Compressor & Rock Borer”. “Bohemian Glassware” brought down from Sydney was valued at £600. The profits from this Exhibition were used to fund the sculpture known as the Gold Monument, which still gazes along Pall Mall (from the McCrae Street end). The Exhibition’s Cash Book shows payments, which totalled £1160, were made to then up and coming sculptor C.D.Richardson.
