Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. was a North American jewellery company that was established in 1949 by the Stuart family as part of Emmons Jewelry, Inc. It began operations in England and Australia in 1968, and in Australia it moved from Carlton in Melbourne to Wodonga in 1969. The premises were originally on High St. in Wodonga, but a new warehouse was built in Melbourne Rd. later in 1969. It was a direct selling jewellery business using a party-plan model similar to Tupperware and Avon. The sales reps or 'Hostesses' were provided with jewellery samples in demonstration kits, which they displayed at jewellery parties in their homes. The designs for jewellery such as brooches, necklaces, earrings, chokers and bracelets were purchased from freelance designers and jewellery manufacturers rather than in-house designers. In 1979 Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. in Wodonga was bought by three Australian businessmen, including Wodonga local Jim Sawyer, and continued to sell jewellery under the name "Sargem Pty. Ltd”, for several more years in the 1980s. As part of the Sarah Coventry collection, the necklace has local significance with the decentralised commercial development of regional centres such as Wodonga in NE Victoria, as well as national and international significance from the perspective of social and economic developments for women after World War II. Many wonderful and intriguing items from gold coins to tiled floors and human skeletons have been found. The first major dig uncovered the structure of the royal apartments next to the river. Not only did it clarify the floor plan but finds included some rare Tudor ceiling decorations, a hoard of gold coins and many personal items such as dice used for gaming. Perhaps the most revealing excavations have been the most recent. This trowel was presented to City of Bendigo Mayor, Simeon Ryan by Mr B. Deakin the Australian representative of the Victorian Electric Supply Company on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone for the new power house building in Hargreaves Street, Bendigo. This power house was built to supply power to both Bendigo and Eaglehawk and the overhead power system for the tramway which ran from Quarry Hill, through the city to Eaglehawk and from Golden Square to Lake Weeroona. The building of the power house changed Eaglehawk and Bendigo as street lights were installed and houses became electrified. A report in the Bendigo Independent in 1902 reported ' Night will then be almost as brilliant as the day and people .... who live in the suburbs are to be provided with a tram service worth of the name'. (See reference A Mammoth Scheme.) The tramways closed in April 1972 after the Victorian Parliament granted the SEC an application to cease operating. Today Bendigo Trust operates the tourist trams which run along Pall Mall and welcomes over 40,000 visitors annually. The Bendigo Tramways Depot is the oldest operating tram depot in Australia and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. This is a set of 15 photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, by the Regimental Sergeant-Major of the Australian Army (RSM-A) WO1 Kevin (Lofty) Wendt OAM, BEM on the 10th of August 1989. He was taken on a tour through the production facilities and messes. RSM-A WO1 Kevin (Lofty) Wendt OAM, BEM was the 2nd RSM to be appointed to the position of RSM-A, the most senior Warrant Officer position in the Australian Army. His appointment was from 1987 to 1990. On this occasion he was escorted by WO1 Neville Stone, who was the RSM of the Army Survey Regiment from 1988 to 1990. This bottle came from the general store of Russell and Powell of Fairy Street Warrnambool. This store sold an extensive range of imported wines and spirits as well as tea, clothing materials and hardware. Samuel Giffen Russell, born in Belfast, Ireland, established his store in Warrnambool in 1878 and took Joseph Powell as a partner in 1881. The business premises in Fairy Street were built in 1882. Giffen Russell was Mayor of Warrnambool from 1898 to 1900. By the early 1900s the firm had a store in Bank Street, Port Fairy and was known as Giffen Russell and Company and the business continued under that name until the late 1940s, the proprietor at that time being Harry Lynch. The Lynch family carried on this business until the second decade of the 21st century. This stoneware bottle is of some importance as it is one of the few items we have that came from the long-established Warrnambool general store of S.Giffen Russell.This is a stone bottle in cream and brown tonings. It has a circular base and body with a short neck and a moulded top opening. There is a screw top. This demijohn came from the produce store of T. Redford and Co. Thomas Redford came to Warrnambool in 1864 and worked in the produce store at the corner of Fairy and Timor Streets. This had been established by Redford’s uncle, Frederick Stevens in 1857. Thomas Redford became the proprietor of this produce store in 1879 with the trading name of T. Redford & Co. Thomas Redford was a noted sportsman in Warrnambool (cricket and football) and was a Town Councillor from 1884 to 1890. His son, a Major in World War One, was killed at the battle of the Nek in 1915. Thomas Redford senior died in 1907 but the firm of T. Redford & Co continued on until the early 1920s. This demijohn is of significance as a memento of an important produce business in Warrnambool – the firm of T. Redford & Co was in existence for over 40 years. This is a stone demijohn with a cream-coloured base and body and a brown top and brown handle. The circular opening has a metal top. The maker’s name is etched into the top section. ‘T.
