Would appear to be on a tram tour, given the various people on both trams taken photographs. Possibly the AETA Easter 1958 tour - see Reg. Item No. 122 for a set of tour notes. Taken by John Alfred. Has the Commonwealth Bank, Craigs Hotel and MLC buildings in the background. On rear written in blue ink "Ballarat / Lydiard and Sturt Sts. (S.E. Twenty four page book including card covers on glossy paper titled "The Essendon Tramways" written by Jack Richardson, published by Traction Publications, Historical Series No. 153 in 1963. The story of the North Melbourne and Electric Tramway and Lighting Company. Note on page 3, advises that this book was the 2nd edition. Price at the time 3/- Details the historical background, a map of the tramway in 1906, relationship with the Victorian Railways, construction, rolling stock, carbarn, (depot) power station, overhead, takeover by the MMTB, connection to the City, 1963 map, expansion under the MMTB, services at the time of publication, Rolling Stock Roster, notes on some of the personnel of the tramway, junction details and dates of the various extensions etc. Includes a number of photographs, a list of railway and tramway books published by Traction Publications, a publishers note and on the rear cover a short biography on the author. 2459.1 - 1st edition of book - no cover page, rear cover remains. Thirty two page book contained within a heavy card cover, saddle stapled. Printed on gloss paper with many black and white photos inside and colour cover. Book titled "Melbourne Tram Review" written by R.A. Birrell Details the formation of the MTA, The Met or the Metropolitan Transit Authority from the MMTB in 1983, the changing nature of the fleet, depots and allocations of tramcars, listing of tram classes, with various technical specifications, including tramcar numbers and photographs. For the B class, includes those which were not in service at the time of publication. Two separate allocation listings are given, the last one being that at 19/9/1988. Has contents pages, introduction by author and on rear cover, a listing of other publications produced by the publisher, Railmac. Yields information about ESCo tram No. 18 and the way it was presented about 1930.Black and white photograph contained within Reg. Item 2488, page 27, of ESCo No. 18, side on view of tram showing arrangements after windscreens installed and seats reversed. Photographed at Grenville St., after the large tramway shelter removed. Tram fitted with a Suttons Pianos and Players roof ad board. Has an "Enter Front End" sign on the rear of the tram. Photo about the mid 1920's On the right hand edge of the photograph is a faint stamp "Richards & Co / Photos". Alongside photo is a handwritten not on the size of the motors fitted to the various ESCo trams and the weight of the trams. Note Item Not formally Numbered. Gives the various run numbers, sign on location, trip take times, notes on what to do with trams, sign off times, interface with other runs. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways management system of Motorman's' rosters interfacing during the last full period of operation of the tramway. Shows the services and how the various run or crew tables were arranged in relation to the overall timetable. Photo copy on heat sensitive paper of a handwritten sheet on graph paper for the arrangement of the Weekdays, Saturday and Sunday Rosters on the various Ballarat routes. Gives the various run numbers, sign on location, trip take times, notes on what to do with trams, sign off times, interface with other runs. Shows the full or basic 20 min service during the day and 30 mins at night. Show how the various run or crew tables were arranged to provide the service overall.
