Photograph, Barber's Bridge on Olinda Creek
John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. Barbers Bridge was named after George Barber, an early settler.Black and white photograph showing a man standing on a bridge over the Olinda Creek. 1910Handwritten n reverse: Barbers Bridge on Olinda Creek 1910. This was a ford crossed by the road after Isaac Jeeves selected allotment “C” “Jeeves Saddle” in 1871 and stopped travel through his property. The bridge has been built several times but at time of writing (1974) is replaced by a culvert consisting of two pipes two feet six inches wide. They are quite incapable of carrying the maximum flow of the creek and will be swept away.lundy-clarke, barber, barbers bridge, isaac jeeves, jeeves saddle, bridge, olinda creek -

Photograph, Demolition of Tower House Day and Boarding School, Surrey Hills in 1932 (2), 20/08/1932
This building dated back to the 1880s and had previously operated as Delany's Hotel and then the Royal Hotel. It was built near the site of the original Delany's Hotel, built in 1856. The Royal Hotel closed in 1921 after the area voted to be a 'dry area'. Tower House Day and Boarding School operated from 1921 until 1932. Norman Carter took many photos of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert from the 1920s; many were associated with events and activities of the Church of England.Black and white photo of a partially demolished building. The roof is missing and there is a pile of rubble along the front wall. What remains indicates that it has been a large building in the Victorian style. There is a mixture of treatments to the surrounds of the windows. On the RHS part of a truck can be seen.Original: Top LH corner in blue biro "see matching photo"; top RH corner "498 / spare"; bottom LH corner in lead pencil "N Carter"; bottom RH corner in blue biro "20-8-32" - all Jocelyn Hall's handwriting.tower house day and boarding school, schools, education, royal hotel, hotels, construction and demolition, dry area, licensing polls, temperance movement, delany's hotel, norman carter -

black and white photograph, 1850 - 1885
The Lochiel barn was used as the church for all denominations until 1885 when the parishioners were offered the use of a school room, then used the Mechanics' Hall after it was built in 1887. Mr James Cameron, fostered the developing Church, not only by allowing his barn at Lochiel Park to be used for Church services but also by making a home there for Mr Martin ,First Church of England clergyman stationed at Orbost - 1884-1891 over a period of years, until a small Vicarage was built on the spot where the present church stands. From Mr Cameron’s barn the church migrated to the school building erected in the main street and thence after a short time to the Mechanics Hall, built in 1887. This item is reminiscent of the late 19th - mid 20th centuries when church-going was more common.A very old black / white photograph of a house with a barn in the background. The house is on a bush block with many trees around it.on back - handwritten "From Mrs N Edgar, 4 "Heecer" Parade....... Lochiel + Barn M. Gilbert"church-orbost lochiel-barn -

book, Peisley, Allan B, Genoa School History, second half 20th century
The book was compiled by Allan B. Peisley. In 1891 a pineboard, portable school building was sent from Melbourne to Gabo by schooner, and transported to a site approximately 1½ miles SE of Genoa. When erected by Henry Bucknall, it was listed as Genoa River School. It opened on 24th of August with an enrolment of approximately 20 pupils under the guidance of Algernon de Havilland, and served the district until 1928 when a combination of white ants and dry rot caused the building to be abandoned. School was held in the Genoa hall as a 'temporary' measure until a new building was erected, and it was during this period that N. A. Wakefield, later lecturer and author of natural history articles and books, served as HT. The ‘temporary' measure proved seemingly permanent as it was not until 1953 that a new school was built on the present site, ½ mile W of Genoa. This school was opened by the late Sir Albert Lind on 15th of August 1953, the original name being amended to Genoa State School. Since then much has been done to maintain the grounds and buildings at a high standard. This item is a useful reference tool on the history of Genoa in East Gippsland.A book of 36 pp titled Genoa School History. On the front cover are black and white images of buildings and wrens. The text is black. The pages have been photocopied.education genoa -

Program, The Arcadions' Wurzel - Flummens, 1934
This is a program for two plays staged by The Arcadians in 1934. This drama group was originally known as the Warrnambool High School Ex-Students’ Dramatic Society and was founded in 1925 by Colonel Langley, the Head Master of Warrnambool High School and his wife, Edmee. The Arcadians drama group was still operating in 1947 and proceeds from the productions went to the Warrnambool High School, funding many school projects including a tennis court, a Senior English prize and Watson Hall. By 1934 a special project was the funding of the ‘Langley Library’. Notable among The Arcadians performers were Colonel George Langley (in the early years of the group), Horace Jones, an English teacher at the school, Syb Carpenter, Bill Earle, Mary and Ron Mack and Nancy Humm. This programme is of particular interest as an example of the plays staged by the well-known Warrnambool drama group, The Arcadians. This is a programme made of two sheets of green paper folded in two to make eight pages. The printing is in black. The sheets were originally stapled but the metal staples have been removed. The inscription is handwritten in blue ink. ‘N. J. The SS Schomberg was a clipper built in Aberdeen by Alexander Hall & Co. for "the Black Ball line" which was a subsidiary of James Baines & Co., for carrying large cargoes and steerage passengers. When built, she was regarded as the most luxurious and well-built clipper of the period. She was sunk on her maiden voyage in 1855 on the Shipwreck Coast of Victoria, Australia.Baines & Co were the owners of the SS Great Britain, and Alexander Hall & Co. was the leading clipper shipbuilder in Britain. She was named after Captain Charles Frederick Schomberg R N., the Emigration Commissioner for Liverpool, an influential man when it came to securing government contracts for the carriage of emigrants. The Black Ball Line’s owners clearly sought his favour. She was launched in Aberdeen, Scotland, on 7 April 1855 and sank on her maiden voyage in 1855 on the Shipwreck Coast of Victoria, Australia.A cast brass boot spurschomberg, salvage, diving, shipwreck coast -
