On the 28th & 29th of July, 1978, a second "Living with Arthritis - Aids to Daily Living" exhibition was held at the Peter Fraser Memorial Hall in Barkly St, Footscray. The exhibition, (the first of which had been held at Brighton's St Andrew's Parish Hall in May), was an educational and fundraising event in support of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria (RAAV). In this photo, Mr David Butler, physiotherapist at Western and General Hospital, addresses the audience at the exhibition. Seated behind him is Dr Leslie Koadlow (partially obscured). A severely cropped version of this photo appears on page 4 of the Vol 10, September 1978 edition of RAAV's quarterly newsletter, News Review. In late 1989, member of the Joint Action Group and Fitness Leader, Sonja Wilson, had registered for the Great Victorian Bike Ride and was looking for sponsors. This photo of Sonya in front of the Arthritis Centre sign on the grounds of the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Hospital appears on page 16 of the Vol 2 No 4, November 1989 issue of the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria's quarterly newsletter, Arthritis Update. It accompanies a brief article titled, "Sponsorship please". The article states that Sonya, a Fitness Leader with the AFV, is seeking sponsors for her participation in the Great Victorian Bike Ride, to be held in December that year. The ride would be taking place from Yarrawonga to Melbourne, and Sonya would be fundraising to benefit people with arthritis. On the 26th of March, (circa 1989), various staff from the Royal Melbourne Hospital took part in a Joint Walk event. According to Leonie Oldmeadow, Senior Clinician Musculoskeletal Therapist at the hospital, many of the participants were from the Environmental Services department of the hospital. The event included a 5-minute warm-up, a 20-minute walk, and a 5-minute cool-down (pictured). Many of the participants were keen to continue to do a "Joint Walk" on a regular basis.COL photo of a group of people demonstrating some exercises to a group of nurses. Dr Leslie Koadlow AO (1920-2006), Rheumatologist, was the Medical Director of the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Hospital. In 1968, he co-founded the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria (RAAV) with his secretary, Alice Petty, and one of his patients, Mollie Riches (1896-1979). This photo of Dr Koadlow and Mollie Riches appears on page 11 of the Vol. 9, July 1978 edition of RAAV's quarterly newsletter, News Review. It is captioned, "Vision Becomes Reality. Co-founders, Dr Les Koadlow and Mrs Mollie Riches, together again at RAAV's new Action Centre in the grounds of Royal Talbot, where the idea for RAAV was born." The photo accompanies an article titled, "LINCOLN INSTITUTE HELPS OUT". The article states that RAAV approaced the Lincoln Centre's Department of Educational Resources to enlist the services of their photographers to take a photo of Dr Koadlow for a press release. A cropped version of the photo also appears (with other photos) on the front cover of the Vol 19 Issue 2, Winter 2006 edition of Update. The Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria's second Christmas Family Fun Day fete was held on the 1st of December, 1979 at Action House, on the grounds of the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Hospital in Kew. This photo depicts the Kew Citizens' Band performing at the fete. According to an article published in the Vol 15, December 1979 issue of the Association's quarterly newsletter, News Review, two bands provided musical entertainment on the day - the Kew Citizens Band and the Irish National Pipe Band. A photo of the Irish National Pipe Band appears on page 1 (the front cover) of the newsletter; however, this photo of the Kew Citizens Band was not published. On the 19th of January, 1983, Cynthia Shone of Frankston received a Tattersall's Award for Enterprise and Achievement. The award was presented by the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Frankston, Jane Hill. Mrs Shone received the award "for her ingenuity in inventing simple aids for fellow arthritics which allow them to be more self-sufficient". Mrs Shone also received a cash prize of $500, which she donated to the Frankston Hospital for extensions to the physiotherapy department, where she receives treatment at the arthritis clinic for several hours each week.B&W photo of two women posing for a photo. It was sent to the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria, along with three photos taken at the Greek Fund for Arthritis Research Seminar, and a second envelope containing raffle books and money. The funds were raised on behalf of the Greek Fund for Arthritis Research, Royal Melbourne Hospital, to benefit the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria.
