Early photograph of the Ballarat East Convent of Mercy - Sacred Heart College. Appearing in this image is the first brick addition to the original wooden cottage building, this addition was completed in 1890. This first brick addition to the convent was officially opened by the Bishop of Ballarat on 11th July, 1890. This plate came from St Ann’s School, Warrnambool. It was probably used in the boarding house section and may have been used for either soup or cereal. St Ann’s School opened in 1872 as St Mary’s Convent of Mercy School, Wyton, with the latter name being the name of the ex-John Ardlie house in which the school was initially established. There were eight foundation Sisters of Mercy. The name changed to St Ann’s Convent School in 1888 and in 1991 it amalgamated with the Warrnambool Christian Brothers College to form Emmanuel College.This plate is an interesting memento of St. Ann’s School in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century.This is a round china plate with a green and yellow band around the inner edge of the plate. There is also the emblem of the school with the name and motto. The plate has a dip or recess in the middle. Newspaper Clipping (p7) from "Catholic", No. 178, November 1998, contains the story written by Mother May Oliver, Imp. James O'Collins RC Bishop of Ballarat, January 1945, chapter 7 of "All for All", relating to the life of the 'the young girl countess Elizabeth Wolff-Metterich of Germany. The story revolves around her visit to Melbourne and Ballarat - in particular the visit to Lorretto - sighting of 'a tram (streetcar) bearing 'convent' as its head sign'. The reference to arrival by tram in the article suggests by the author that the Countess arrived by electric tram (by the use of the word 'streetcar'. In actual fact, date of visit was 1898, so it would have be the horse tram. The conductor on the rear of No. 2 is holding the trolley rope, while the driver of No. 20 is watching the road closely. The conductor of the tram is reboarding or about to alight. No. 20 has the destination of Gardens via Convent. Other trams are in the background. Wal has dated the photograph about 1909. Note the point frog or pan in the overhead above No. 20 and in particular notes the type of destination box and that the tram is going to the Gardens via the Convent. Donation of Barry Payne. Mother Gonzaga Barry founded a school at Portland, on Victoria’s south west coast, after spending time there convalescing in around 1881. In December 1884, M. Gonzaga and community of five went to Portland and founded Loreto Convent, Portland, in a six room cottage belonging to D. Edgar in Bentinck Street, ‘Bayview Cottage’, which had been used by Mary MacKillop and family as a school. Mother Boniface Volcher was the first Superior and Mother Raphael Gallavan the first Mistress of Schools. Later ‘Seaview Cottage’ next door was purchased which was to become the boys’ college, St. Aloysius. In 1900 the front of the Convent was built and in 1903 the wing with the spire was added. Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 7 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. This photograph was taken during a flood year when the Yarra encroached on the grounds of the Abbotsford Convent. The dress was made by Miss Mary Ryan, a pupil at Lilydale Convent (now Mt Lilydale College) in 1902. It was worn to the Annual Empire Day Celebrations in Lilydale. Accompanying photo shows dress worn by Monica Ryan (no. 5089). The outfit also includes two hand made pockets for handkerchiefs and ties (nos. 735 & 736) Empire Day Dress; Cream silk, cotton lined, embroidered with kangaroos and emu holding shield, with Southern Cross stars above rising sun emblem. Banner below reads 'Advance Australia', embriodered with silk and cotton thread; also gold metalic braiding. Bodice of dress decorated with embroidered Australian and British flags, wattle branches and eucalyptus leaves, cotton, leather leaves(?); centre of dress and sleeve cuffs decorated with red, blue and white ribbons.
