Coin collections have a long and varied history. Coins were often collected in churches in a box located near the entrance/exit, and later via a collection plate that was passed amongst the congregation Funds were used to repair the church or feed the poorest of the parish. The donation of coins is and was considered part of religious life and mentioned in Christian, Jewish and Islamic texts. With the need and expansion of charitable works occurring outside religious life, charity boxes began to spread into hospitals, orphanages and asylums. The need for non-fixed boxes grew with the rise in charities and their activities outside a fixed building. Collection boxes could be large (and therefore hard to move) or could be held by individuals acting as collection agents, working at a specific location, moving between dwellings or at events. The wheel came in a container from Liechenstein - Anitque Export Establishment (P.O. Box 21 498, FI - 9493 Mauren, Liechtenstein). It came with a number of dressers and tables. The flax on the original bobbin was present when Mrs Fabb purchased the wheel. Mrs Fabb purchsed the wheel c. 1985-1990 from a secondhand/antique shop in Para Road, Greensborough, Melbourne. The function was Melbourne Legacy's way of saying thank you to the many valued friends who do so much in assisting Legacy in many different ways throughout the year. Two generous cheques were presented to Legacy, by Simon Kinch of the Blackburn RSL and Jim Stevens and Ray Skals from the Watsonia RSL. Watsonia RSL had donated over $188,000 in the preceding 10 years. An article from 1977 about a scheme by the Education department whereby toys are donated to charities such as Legacy which was in place since 1949. Sometimes these toys and clothing were given to junior legatees at the Christmas party. The photo shows four boys from Dromana Technical School making toys in their woodworking class. They are Richard Freeman, Ray Bryant, Shane Matthews and Wayne Poulton. The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrapbook. For many years Legacy kept scrapbooks of press clippings that related to their work and publicity.
