Thomas' pharmacy operated from Fairy Street in Warrnambool, initially from 90 fairy Street on the corner of Fairy and Koroit Streets then later moving to 140 Fairy Street on the corner of Fairy and Lava Streets. Mrs W L Hobson is noted as the pharmacist in the 1970's. Olive oil in the 1970's was used primarily to moisten and cleanse dry skin.It has also been used as a laxative. James Hobson Aveling (1828-98) invented this type of forceps. They are made from steel with an ebony handle. Obstetrical forceps gripped a baby’s head to help delivery during difficult childbirths. Aveling thought a curved handle rather than a straight one would improve grip and make the forceps easier to insert into the body. James Duncan was tried for his involvement in the Nelson Robbery in 1852. The robbery of the barque 'Nelson' is one of the most notorious crimes of the 1850s. Duncan, along with James Morgan, John James, Stephen Fox and John Roberts , robbed the ship of over cash and gold nuggets at gun point while she was anchored at Hobsons Bay, off Melbourne. One of the victims of the robbery identified Duncan to police by his voice. Duncan was sentenced by the notorious Justice Redmond Barry to 15 years hard labour on the roads. This photograph was taken at the "old station" at Corringle near Orbost. It was a popular picnic spot. Late in 1857 Mr Thomas T. Stirling took over Corringle Run ("Corringle" means "shallow water"). Mr Stirling and his family came from the wester district - Winchelsea. He settled at the Old Station. A few people were employed at the Orbost Stationb and there was settlement on the Orbost flats, Mr T. T. Stirling held the land from Lake Tyrers to Bemm River as a cattle run. About 1888 he became Secretary of the new Tambo Shire. Found in garden shed of Mr Harry Barratt [WWI Gallipoli] and donated by his grandson. In 1877 Swan island was designed to defend shipping in Port Phillip and Hobson's Bays. The scheme, involving massive expenditure, comprised a forward defence system of forts at Port Phillip heads dominated by Fort Queenscliff and South Channel Fort (artificial island), and a network of coastal batteries. Some development of fortification had occurred in the 1850s, but it was the impetus of the Jervois-Scratchley reports which led to major work being undertaken in the 1880s. The overall defence plan involved a combination of guns, mines (known as electric torpedo) and ships to defend the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. Swan Island Fort would be used to protect the minefields in the harbour, Naval observation countermine charge 500lbs wet G.C Standard mine from 1877 to 1905 when charge was removed and mines used as buoys. These are photographs of students at the Orbost Higher Elementary School in 1923. They were taken at the Snaggers Lane end of the Snowy River. with the students is teacher, Miss Wyatt. This is the second edition of the book. Benjamin Boyd 1796 - 1851) was a Scottish-born Australian pioneer and entrepreneur, and briefly, a politician. He arrived in Hobson's Bay, Port Phillip District, on his schooner, the Wanderer, on 15 June 1842, and reached Port Jackson, Sydney, on 18 July 1842. He was a shipping magnate, merchant, banker, pastoralist and station owner, Member of the Legislative Council, town planner and a whaler Boyd became one of the largest landholders and graziers of the colony of New South Wales; before suffering financial difficulties and becoming bankrupt. Boyd briefly tried his luck on the Californian goldfields before being purportedly murdered on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. Many of his business ventures involved blackbirding, the practice of coercing and kidnapping South Sea Islanders as slave labourers. Erection of new butts by the members of the St Kilda Volunteer Army Corps in 1874, after the government took possession of the land that the Volunteer Army Corps had been using. The butts were banks constructed of sand and earth, kept together with saplings, to create areas for shooting practice. They were constructed on the beach at Hobson's Bay, half a mile from the St Kilda jetty. The life buoy from the Largs Bay located above the bar helps dating the photograph to post 1957: Largs Bay was launched in 1921, as a mixed passenger/cargo ship. During WW2 she took part in a large number of convoys.nIt was scrapped in 1957 so had a service life of 36 years. Her sister ships were Jervis Bay, Moreton Bay, Esperance Bay and Hobsons Bay. She carried many passengers to Australia to start new lives after WW2. In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. Black Rock House was built in 1858 by wealthy land dealer and politician Charles Hobson Ebden as a holiday home on 112 acres of virgin scrub, taking in the area of present day Balcombe Road, Beach Road and the line of Keating Street. The house included four bedrooms, a cellar, stables and a courtyard enclosed in castle-like sandstone walls. This type of large, brass tap is typical of the plumbing fittings manufactured in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The tap has encrustations and concretion inside, showing that it had been in the sea for quite some time. The pipe leading to the spout is squashed, nicked and appears to have been sawn or broken off. It could have once been part of the plumbing from a ship, perhaps from one of the boilers used in the kitchen, for bathing or for laundry or cleaning. The name “BEST” on the tap signifies that it could have been made by Robert Best who began his Birmingham brass foundry c. 1840, and even though The information from the donor is that tap was given to her father (1906-1982) who lived in the Warrnambool district. It was likely given by a cray fisherman or diver, who said that the tap came from the Loch Ard shipwreck, wrecked on Mutton Bird Island, east of Port Campbell, Victoria, on 1st June 1878. This could easily be the case but there is no provenance for it. ROBERT BEST, BRASS FOUNDRY Circa 1840 Robert Best founded his brass foundry business and was referred to as a Brass Chandelier of Birmingham”. In 1864 an advertisement in the Journal of Gas Lighting, Water Supply, & Sanitary Improvement announces Best and Hobson, late Robert Best, 100 Charlotte Street Birmingham, manufacturers of Chandeliers, Brass and iron fittings, Steam and Water-cocks etc. gas apparatus of every description, Plumber's brass foundry, with works at Birmingham and Great Bridge, Staffordshire. In 1867 Best & Lloyd was formed, after Best and Hobson went into liquidation, manufacturing at the Cambray Works of Wattville Road, Handsworth. It was a light industrial engineering works and one of the owners was Robert Dudley Best’s father. Robert Dudley Best (1892-1984) later took over the business of Best & Lloyd. The company is still in business at Downing Street, Smethwick, Birmingham. In 1878, brass ship furniture and bell fittings stamped “BEST” was made by William Udal & Co., who advertised as manufacturers of BEST cast and stamped brass foundry goods. This large brass tap is typical of industrial tapware of the mid-late 19th ancenturies 20th century. The location of the tap when found is associated with the Warrnambool district and could have easily been from a shipwreck due to the encrustation found inside the tap. Due to its design and manufacturer, the tap is associated with the mid-late 19th and early 20th-century manufacture of plumbing fittings. Tap, brass, heavy-duty, with butterfly handle. The design and style are typical of the plumbing of the late 1800s. Inscription pressed into the handle, within rectangular border "BEST".
