Photographed in 1872 by William PATERSON as one of a series for the Melbourne Exhibition of 1873; original mount hanging in Engineering Department at Port Melbourne Town Hall at 19-9-1994 but now in Port Phillip,City Collection. This set of original prints belonged to Town Clerk Syd ANDERSON, then to his daughter-in-law Phyllis ANDERSON (donor). Accompanied by list of captions, both hand written and typed (the latter a partial listing).View southeast in Bay Street from roof of building on north west corner of Bay and Liardet Streets c1871. Includes hotel identified in caption as "Foundry" on opposite corner (if captions were written in the 1920s the Port Theatre had already been constructed at this site, but there once was a 'Foundry' Hotel on that corner*); ginger beer/lemonade factory (Dawborns?) and pawnbroker; Graham Family Hotel can be seen in the distance at far left; also Holy Trinity (iron, with tower), Victorian Sugar Works, Post Office/Mail Exchange. This small, French postcard presumably shows an artist's impression of Bay Street looking towards the Bay. However, although there are trams , the buildings are not recognisable as Port Melbourne and several are definitely not Port ( i.e. spires & domes). Town Pier is not depicted and the configuration of the ships on the Bay is wrong. Also,the supposedly Australian flag, in the top left corner, is not correct. In 2005, members of the PMH&PS undertook a study of the residents of the houses in a Port Melbourne street precinct from the 1880s to 1960. The area is bounded by Evans Street, the E side of Bridge Street, S side of Williamstown Road, Farrell Street both the E & W sides plus the section of Ross Street between Farrell and Bridge and the part of Derham Street between Farrell and Bridge. The resulting map and an interactive CD won the Best Community Research, Registers & Records project at the 2007 Victorian Community History Awards. The project was launched on the railway reserve near the corner of Evans & Farrell streets. Typed letter on paper with Hanro letterhead and dated 30 November 1932. It mentions that the new company will execute the Bank Mortgage forms over the deeds at present held by the bank.
