A Bendigo Advertiser newspaper article titled 'The Bendigo Fuse Factory by Amy Huxtable.' In 1860 Mr. Charles Perry set up as Proprietor of stamper grating works and was later joined by his nephew Mr. W. Hunter. During this time Mr. Perry worked on a model machine for constructing safer fuses. In 1876 Mr. Charles Perry built a fuse factory in Wattle Street. He refined his machines making them larger and very suitable for building safer fuses. In 1888 the English firm of fuse manufacturers Bickford, Smith & Co., purchased the factory and the secret of the manufacture. In 1912 the Wattle Street building was purchased by Tony Patterson and Huon Matear and was known as the Economic Manufacturing Co. (Bendigo White Works) making underwear. This was followed by Crestknit Industries which ceased operation in 1977. A Bendigo Advertiser newspaper article titled '1899 - 1977 - and still the heart of fire fighting - Bendigo Fire Station classified by the National Trust by Amy Huxtable.' This article is an historical account of the history of the Bendigo Fire Station since the foundation stone was laid in View Street on September 23, 1898 by the Hon. J. S. Sternberg, MLC. Prior to that from the 1850s fire fighting involved a bucket and a horse. With the laying of the foundation stone came the merger of the three central brigades to become one strong unit under one control. There are some historical photos included in the article. Newspaper atricle with photo of the poppet legs of the South Deborah Mine being dismantled. Locals has complained about the safety of the poppet legs. The Mines Department condemmed them and ordered their removal. They were erected in 1938. Handwritten extracts from the New Chum Railway Mine Manager's Report 17/2/03. Mine Manager W Hicks. Extracts: Machinery. New Boiler is giving every satisfaction. While bailing water after the Xmas holidays, one of the ropes broke with a full tank of water. The tank being fitted with safety appliances, acted. Therefore no damage was done to the shaft. The old ropes were taken off and replaced by two new ones of 2,500 feet each, with a breaking strain of 34 tons. Mine 7 machinery are all in good working order. 1925 - Portion of Cath.
