Gillies Pies was started by three brothers from Charlton, in central Victoria, Les, Alan and Norm Gillies who left their farm after the 1940s drought and headed to Bendigo to start anew. From their first small bakery in Mitchell Street, the brothers eventually went on to employ about 200 people with wholesale and retail locations spreading across the state and distribution including Melbourne.A double-sided sign, both sides are identical. A rectangular metal sign painted dark blue with white writing and a white line around the edge which has a quarter circle indentation on each corner. The writing is all in capital letters and states DO NOT SPIT ON FOOTPATHS PENALTY £5. the reverse of the sign is identical. The sign is 30.5 centimetres long and 15.5 centimetres wide. This is a photograph of Bruce Evans, Member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, signing the visitors' book at the Orbost High School Golden Jubilee in 1962. In 2012, Orbost Secondary College and the wider community celebrated 100 years of secondary education in Orbost. With earlier levels of schooling available at the Orbost State School or nearby schools of Newmerella and Jarrahmond School, it was not until April 1912, and after much campaigning from parents and other notable community members, that the Orbost Higher Elementary School was opened. Mr Richard Trembath was appointed the new Head teacher of Orbost Higher Elementary School and was assisted by Miss Olga Hirst. The senior class consisted of 26 pupils, and the junior class, 16 pupils. A limited curriculum was available which included lessons in Latin, Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Geography, History, Drawing and advanced English. Sign, painted onto a MMTB auxiliary destination board of the type that could hang on the front of a Melbourne tram car with the words "Australian Electric Traction Association Special Car". Used for special tours by the AETA. Metal sign, fitted with metal hanging brackets, riveted to sign on both sides. Manufactured by rolling the outer edges over a 4mm diameter steel rod. Has been painted over a an old sign "Direct to Trotting Showgrounds??? via Abbotsford St 3d". Second sign painted over a sign that had on one side "Via Elsternwick" and "Via Balaclava Road".
