A regular event for the widows was the annual open air concert in the Fitzroy Gardens. This event was held on the 4th March 1990 and the 3rd Military District Band performed. The concert was held in March for many years. Over 600 ladies from metropolitan and country Victoria attended. The label says that the bandleader was Major Malcolm Bell and Donald Cant was the singer. Donald was a Lance Corporal and member of the 3rd Military Band but was on leave to be the understudy for Anthony Warlow in Phantom of the Opera. The photos show the widows sitting in the sunshine and enjoying the band. Photos were taken by Susie Howard, the publicity officer, and Legatee Melican. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991. Photo of an Anzac Day service in at the Australian Military Cemetery in Harefield UK in 1995. The local school children march to the cemetery to place wreaths, there is a parade of flags, a service and a choir. During World War 1 the Australian Auxiliary Hospital No.1 was stationed at Harefield Park in Harefield, UxBridge, Middlesex UK. 111 Australian soldiers and one nurse from the hospital are buried at St Mary's Church, Harefield. This became an Australian Military Cemetery with individual headstones and an obelisk and arch. The headstones which are of a scroll design unique amongst Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries were chosen by the staff and patients at the hospital. The arch was erected by the CWGC. Anzac Day services are held there and the local school became involved with the headmaster, Mr Jefferies, bringing the school children to lay flowers on every grave and attend the service on Anzac Day. This started in 1921 and has continued until at least 2021. One school child who attended was Mr Alf Young, he made contact with Legacy in the 1990s and sent photos of the Anzac Day Services and the cemetery. Legacy responded by sending Australian flags for the school children and also Legatee John Cohen met with Mr Young when in London. Melbourne Legacy staff member Susie Howard also visited Mr Young and the cemetery in 1995. Mr Young provided historical photos and information of the area to Legacy. He was featured in the widows' newsletter The Answer many times and his death was announced in The Answer in April 1997, he was 85. Many of the photos he provided were labelled as coming from Mr R G Neil, Photographic historian from Harefield. A special luncheon was held for 61 World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. 1993 was Legacy's 70th Anniversary and the luncheon followed the WWI meeting on Thursday 12th August. Legatee waiters included Lucky Luscombe George Woodward and Alan Woodward (seen in the Answer newsletter article with his mother Myrtle). Ron Austin, a World War 1 veteran spoke to entertain the ladies.The photos include George Woodward adding a moustache on another legatee. See also 00908 for black and white photos of the same day. A regular event for the widows was a concert in Fitzroy gardens performed by the Police Band. Usually held in March each year. The police horse Gendarme was a regular favourite and his horse float can be seen in the background. These photos show the widows enjoying the music and performers. President of the Melbourne Widows Club Irene Noll is seen in the first photo in floral top and black skirt. Legatees Geoff Swan and Charles Munnerley are standing by the microphone as Legatee Eddie Jowett reads something. Legatee Jowett regularly hosted and sang at monthly concerts at Legacy House. An article in the Answer in June 1994 shows Irene Noll at the concert in the same clothes so the date is assumed to be 1994. It was the 'Great Tea Party' in June 1992 when the widows rooms were opened after 9 months of renovations. Keesing Photographers took a series of photos on the same day of various ladies. A group of Legacy Widows at a craft afternoon at Legacy House. It shows a lot of busy ladies hard at work making items. Also there are ladies sorting stamps. Legacy widows made items to sell at trading tables and stalls through the year. Especially outside Legacy House in Badge week in September. There were also annual art and craft exhibitions with prizes awarded for the best in each category. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. A group of widows at exercise classes in a pool at Melbourne City Baths. Melbourne Legacy ran an excellent exercise program for its widows for many years and the swim classes were very popular. The instructor for many years was Betty Luders. In one photo she can be seen at the poolside, that photo was printed on then cover of the Melbourne Legacy Widows' Newsletter in July 1991. The photo was on the front of The Age and classes took place at the City Baths twice a week and Betty instructed them in aqua aerobics, as well as setting up the first teacher courses for Victorian Council for Swimming beginning in 1985. Betty was often coerced into helping fill in at some of Pat Hanna's performances entertaining the troops, as well as assisting Enez Domec Carre with the Miss Victoria pageants at the Windsor Hotel in the 1950s. Usually the concert was the time the Widows Clubs presented Legacy with funds raised through their fundraising each year - in this case $12,100. The RAAF Central Band was conducted by Sq. Ldr. Graham Lloyd, and trombone soloist Sergeant Mike Hawkins and Ivor Jones (ex POW from Changi) also performed. The article shows Legatee Eddie Jowett with performers Ivor Jones and Margaret Nisbett. A regular event for the widows was a Christmas concert at the Melbourne Town Hall. The performers were the RAAF Central Band. Held in December each year. These photos are the same event as black and white photos and a proof sheet 911202A and 011202B (01335). One photo show President Sullivan presenting flowers to Inez Bruce, Vera Lang and Joan Redmond. Usually the concert was the time the Widows Clubs presented Legacy with funds raised through their fundraising each year - in this case $14,000 - and the president acknowledges with flowers. The article mentions that over 2000 widows attended the 29th Annual Widows' Club Christmas Concert. The concert is a welcome highlight of the year, widows from Melbourne and country Victoria join together to sing carols and enjoy the music of the RAAF Central Band conducted by Squadron Leader Graham Lloyd. Special guest artist included Ivor Jones (a POW in Changi Prison). Also Sgt. Mike Hawkins who had performed 19 times for Legacy. Photograph of Bendigo Tram No 3 at the tram depot, with the destination of Depot. Tram in the ESCo Red and Cream colour scheme with the tram number on the side of the vehicle. The tram commenced life with the Hawthorn Tramway Trust as their No. 8. Became No. 114 when the MMTB took over, sold to the SEC in 1931 and became Bendigo No. 3. It was donated to the AETA in 1956 and subsequently rebuilt as HTT 8. The tram is on display at the Melbourne Tram Museum Hawthorn. See reference for further details.
