Oral history Myrtle Barnett ( 1915- ); fostered daughter of Caroline & Ferdinand Barnett; Lower Plenty. Interviewed on 19 Feb 1996 by Peter Blackbourn. "We lived at Grace Park and could walk straight down the road and over the bridge to the Montmorency State School. The school was in Rattray Rd about half way up the hill. The King family lived next door to the school. One day the students were all taken on a walk to choose the site of the new school (which was built in 1924). In addition to the above story; Myrtle said at either the Lower Plenty School or the Montmorency School there was a teacher they didn’t like so they swapped schools. My Grandmother Jean Barnett; started at Greensborough Primary in 1919 and stayed 3 months. When I told her about this; she told me off and said she never went there! She must have then gone to Montmorency and when there was a call to start a school at Lower Plenty; took the opportunity to get away from the teacher they didn’t like. I’m not sure of the time line for the above events; or which school they swapped to but I thought it gave a little insight into the 1920’s and how Lower Plenty; Montmorency and Greensborough were connected."Transcript of Oral History. barnett family, myrtle barnett -

The billycart was possibly decorated for celebrations associated with Empire Day. Image was originally copied by Chatham Primary School for inclusion in their pictorial history "A Patchwork of People - Chatham Past and Present" [ISBN 0 646 29370 2], by Susan Barnett and Julia Ashby, published in 1996 for the school's 70th anniversary. Copied for the SHNCHC with the school and donor's permission. There is also a laminated copy of it for display purposes.Black and white image of four boys and their billycart. Two are identified as Bruce Hansen, standing behind the flag and Jimmy Boyd, seated in the billycart, which is decorated with streamers, an English flag and advertising signs promoting Australian sultanas and the export of Australian dried fruit to the [British] Empire. The photo was taken in the grounds of Chatham Primary School. This tin of gramophone needles was produced to be used in conjunction with a Decca Gramophone. The Decca company was founded in 1914 by Barnett Samuel and Sons and their gramophone as patented as the world’s first portable gramophone. The company became known as the Decca Gramophone Company in 1928. Portable gramophones became very popular, especially with the soldiers in World War One. Today the gramophone is largely a collector’s item and has been replaced by more sophisticated sound systems. These needles and their box are of interest as an example of a recreation product in the past. Gramophones were found extensively in homes up to the 1950s. This is a small rectangular-shaped tin with rounded edges. It has a hinged lid painted green on the top. The top has printed material in green, black and white lettering. Inside the tin is black paper lining and inside the lining are about 50 gramophone steel needles. This is not a full tin. Chair donated to Melbourne City Mission (probably in 1941) by Mrs RODDA of Williamstown and used at the Port Branch (Jubilee Hall) until its closure . From the 1950s it was used by Sister Norma BARNETT, who kept it until her death. It then went to her 'sister' Janne RAY, and on her death to Janne's daughter Tracey RAY. She donated this plus related items to PMHPS in 2017 (refer 1506 and 3906).01 - solid wooden chair with peaked/pointed shaped back. Arms have rounded ends. This book was produced as part of a raft of community projects under the umbrella of COWCH (City of Whitehorse Community Houses) with funding from the federal government. Projects aimed to celebrate the Centenary of Federation by recording a broad base of aspects of life and experience in Whitehorse drawn from a cross-section of ordinary members of the community. The steering committee for the book worked with the management of the Vermont South Community House - Marjorie Morgan, Carol Pawsey, Val Eldridge, Sue Barnett, Anne Jones, Margaret Banks and Murray Lewis (editor).A collection of stories contributed either as written memoirs or drawn from oral histories that reflect the ways in which the contributors have been associated with the City of Whitehorse.
