Letter 0817a; the writer refers to Allan's 21st birthday and his recent letter from Rio. He also writes of prices rising in Australia, the coal strike, and that 'Sydney especially is badly hit'. The letter was written by Allen Quinn to his mother. Allen started working as a seafarer when he was 16 years old, and frequently wrote to his mother during his travels. He also created an extensive photograph collection, which corresponds with the letters.The letter is part of an ongoing correspondence between Allan and his mother. The first letter talks about the trip from Australia to San Francisco, and the second is about returning to Melbourne.Two letters addressed to Mrs S. Quinn, "Sanlorenzo", 63 Ocean Beach, Manly, N.S.W, Australia, in six parts. Part 0153 Envelope, Part 0153.1-5 Letter Pages. The first letter begins "My dear Mum, Arived here safely..." and concludes with "P.S. The model is slowly coming along...", and is dated 27.6.45. The second letter begins "My Dear Mum, Well, I am now in Melb. ... " and concludes with ""P.S. We were very late in leaving...", and is dated 12.9.45. The matching envelope (0908.b) is addressed to Mr Allen [sic] Quinn. It has been re- addressed from C/- Australia House, The Strand, London, England to 8 Gloucester Walk, W8. Written in the top left hand corner is N Cowley, 542 Jersey St. S.F. Calif. Below this is a purple post office 'Returned To Sender From San Francisco Postage Due.' stamp . This is partially obscured by one of the five three-cent postage stamps placed across the top and down the right hand side of the envelope. The smaller letter (0856.c) is from Allan to the Manager of The State Savings Bank of Victoria, Head Office, Melbourne giving permission for Allan's mother to draw on his account. The original aircraft depicted was assigned to the US 5th Air Force, 49th Fighter Group, 9th fighter Squadron and flown by Lt. Reynold from May 1942 until early August 1942. The aircraft was nicknamed "Stardust". On 8th August 1942 this P40 was assigned to the Royal Australian Air Force as Kittyhawk A29-136 and assigned the code letter "N", retaining the "Stardust" nickname. This aircraft was often flown by Flying Officer Bruce Watson of 75 Squadron RAAF.1/48 plastic scale model of a P40E-1 Kittyhawk painted to represent 75 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force in New Guinea in mid 1942.kittyhawk -
