In 1920 Michael Taffe was awarded Junior Cornet Solo Champion at Ballarat's South St competitions, The Grand National Eisteddfod of Australasia. This competition was the premier band contest in Australia with musicians from every state and New Zealand taking part. The large framed studio portrait of Michael together with his cornet and medals was on display in the window of Allan's Music store Melbourne when the building was severely damaged by fire but these items were saved. Part of a large family collection of local & family history items at Hymettus Cottage, home to the same Ballarat family for the past 125. This portrait has a well documented provenance and a known owner and has hung in this historic house for the past 102 years. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection that reflects Ballarat's local history from a family perspective. Quinn CollectionA three page letter written on three sheets of unlined, buff-coloured paper (0908.a1-3). Letter is headed 542 Jersey Street, San Francisco, phone AJ 2-0309 and dated 20/12/52. The matching envelope (0908.b) is addressed to Mr Allen [sic] Quinn. It has been re- addressed from C/- Australia House, The Strand, London, England to 8 Gloucester Walk, W8. Written in the top left hand corner is N Cowley, 542 Jersey St. S.F. Calif. Below this is a purple post office 'Returned To Sender From San Francisco Postage Due.' stamp . This is partially obscured by one of the five three-cent postage stamps placed across the top and down the right hand side of the envelope. 'Air Mail' is written diagonally across the lower left hand corner. On the back is a partially legible postmark dated 2 January 1953. The postmark on the front is illegible. Port Adelaide 31/01/51. Airmail envelope (0857.b) has been re- addressed from C/- Australia House, The Strand, London, England to General Delivery G.P.O. Oslo, Norway. The post-mark, only partly legible, is South Australia and the value of the Australian stamp one shilling and sixpence. On the back of the envelope is a promotional stamp for 'British Industries Fair, 30 April - 11 May 1951, London & Birmingham'. Also a London postmark, an Oslo postmark and a return address as per the heading on the letter with 'South Yarra' substituted for 'Melbourne'.Letter commences "Dear Al,...." and concludes "...your pal Fred". This letter is in reply to a letter from Allan and contains descriptions of life as a crew member on board a Swedish ship. The writer comments on how much prices have increased in Australia in the last twelve months and lists various items (clothing, hair cuts, cigarettes) and their prices. A 1950 Buick is being sold for 3,500 pounds, a 1950 Plymouth for 3,200 pounds and a 1950 Ford for 2,900 pounds. Interesting historical note: the writer of the letter suggests a meeting with her friend Lord Sinha who will give Allan a tour of the Houses of Parliament and lunch. Lord Sinha is the son of Satyendra Prasanna Sinha, 1st Baron Sinha, the first (and only) Indian ever to be given the hereditary peerage and the first Indian member of the House of Lords. The property includes a two-storey mansion, which he built as his family home in 1881. Carn Brea, a castle in Cornwall, was built in the 1500s. After the Queen's Church of England Girls' Grammar School acquired the property in 1919, the mansion was renamed Manifold House. Manifold House now accommodates administrative facilities of the campus and staff offices. Schmidt’s Strawberry Farm is set on acres of lush strawberry fields in Allans Flat, approximately 5 kilometres from Yackandandah and 24 kilometres from Wodonga. Schmidt's is the oldest strawberry winery in Australia, owned and operated by brothers Martin and Michael Schmidt who are third generation strawberry growers/winemakers.This item originates from the oldest strawberry winery in AustraliaA bottle of Schmidt's Strawberry Wine from their 1975 harvest. The bottle bears a beige label with brown text. Journal - Hilary Bennet Mason's History of Charles Street, Surrey Hills
Hilary Bennet Mason (born 25/12/1911 in North Melbourne; died 16/3/2008) married Olive Marjory Muridge (B 20/7/1915; D 26/9/2001) on 30 September 1940. They has one daughter, born in 1947. Hilary had a number of occupations in his lifetime. His daughter referred to him as a tram conductor. The family lived at 7 Charles Street, Surrey Hills from c1960, having purchased it from William Stanton (Stan) Philp, a baker, and his wife Eileen. The title originally extended over 2 plots. The Philps sub-divided the land and built a new house for themselves at No 9. No 7 Charles Street had a well under the kitchen window; the house was extended in 1971/72; it was sold after Hilary Mason died in 2011. [REF: Personal communication from the donor; Alan Holt property register and online research.] The handwritten timeline refers to the area having been "called Irish Town as Catholic's were in the majority." Most of the writing is that of Hilary Mason, although some blanks have been filled in by another (unknown) hand. There is also an entry by John Whitford, who moved into a new home on the corner of Charles and Arthur Streets in 1982. The last entry is dated June 1996, when Hilary Mason would have been c 85 years old.This is a unique piece of social history reflecting the closeness of this small suburban street.A standard lined exercise book, brand is HEADLINE, which contains a mixture of handwritten entries and pasted in and loose ephemeral items. These include house advertising flyers, newspaper clippings of a general nature and death notices, tickets, etc. The handwritten notes mostly pertain to a timeline of residents and their comings and goings to and from Charles Street in Surrey Hills, but also include some reflections on social history. Memories of other residents of the street are recorded. The two photographs show cable trams being shunted into the Brunswick Cable Tram Depot or car house from Sydney Road. The first shows a horse pulling a bogie tram trailer into the car house while the second shows the grip being pushed in by hand. Note the raised position of the grip when this shunting task is performed - 1920s. Ephemera - Leighton Collection: Theatrical Scrapbook
Herbert Allan Leighton was an actor and elocution teacher known widely in the eastern states of Australia where he performed with his wife Tracy Hamilton. But all was not as it seemed. In 1903 he was arrested in Perth after suspicions were raised when he bought expensive clothing and jewellery for his wife. Subsequently six thousand pounds in banknotes was found under his bed. Another fellow from his theatre group was also arrested and charged with Bank robbery. Leighton was charged with receiving money that he knew to be stolen. Investigations by Perth police showed that Leighton was really, Victorian born, Norman Campbell. He had worked as a clerk for Victorian Savings Bank in Melbourne and then in the same role at Sydney Savings Bank in NSW. During this time he had amassed large sums of money by forgery and embezzlement, a crime that he spent 7 years in prison for. He then emerged as the newly minted H. A. Leighton actor and elocution teacher in Bendigo.Large format scrapbook collated by H.A. Leighton. Contains photographs, flyers, programs, newspaper clippings, posters, promotional photos of performers between 1905 and 1909 The material includes items from theatrical performances. The scrapbook has a heavy blue cover with maroon tape binding on the spine and the corners with thick newsprint paper pages. Paper items have been glued onto the pages with several loose items.
