candle holder, early to mid 20th century
Portable candleholders were commonly in use in Australian homes in the 1800s. Candles were very expensive in Australia and often were not available in stores. However, after 1850 the price of candles was reduced and they became readily available throughout Australia. Candleholders were popular as they protected furniture from hot wax. The dish around the candle stem collected the hot wax that could be reused later. When carrying the candleholder, the dish also protected the hand from the hot wax. This one was used by Helena Warren of Newmerella. The candle-holder is an example of an item commonly used before electric light came to the area.A white enameled candleholder which is a hollowed round, white, saucer shape edged in dark blue. In the centre there is a candle-holder on a short stem. It has a dark blue finger-grip ring on the side.lighting candle-holder -

Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Ceremonial object - Candelabra, circa 1900
The origins of the brass candlestick holders are unknown. However, they both are on display in the memorial Chapel of St Peter aka the Mariners' chapel. Given the style of the candlesticks it is possible that they were initially in use at either the original Port Melbourne chapel operating in the late 19thC. or possibly used at the 1907 building, Siddeley st where an improvised chapel was established. The Memorial Chapel of St Peter is a crucial part of the Mission to Seafarers Melbourne building complex, underscoring the relationship between the organisation and the Anglican Church, as well as being a site of continuous usage since the building was opened. This brass candle stand or floor candlestick holder is one of a pair. The candle holder is shaped like an open flower. There is elaborate brass ornamentation, floral in nature. Below is an angel figure holding a sword with both hands with the tip pointing toward its feet. The base of the candlestick is a tripod with three winged dogs, forming the feet. There is elaborate ornamentation that in turn connect each of the dogs together.candelabra, st peter chapel, flinders street, mission to seafarers, seamen's mission -

Document - Advertising item, Matchbox holder, Early 20th century
James Parker and William McMeekin arrived in 1881 in Victoria and commenced their business a large proportion of which was in Warrnambool. They opened up a butter, cheese and pork export trade with South Australia, which operated successfully for sometime before South Australia altered their tariff duties which badly affected trade. After a period dealing with Queensland, they set their sights further afield to London. The Warrnambool butter Factory was commenced around this time and William McMeekin was closely connected with its establishment. They traded in other farm produce and machinery as well as having interests in land, loans and insurance. William McMeekin was a member of the Town Council for some time and J.P. McMeekin was a member of the Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Society and was a director of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory. They operated their business from different sites in Kepler Street and Raglan Parade. An everyday item with a link to an individuals and a company which had a long association with Warrnambool.Aluminium cover with raised edge shaped to fit around top, bottom and one side. Office Equipment, Stamp holder, Mid 20th century
This item would have been used in an office or business for holding stamps of various kinds. It would have been particularly useful in a legal business or a Government Department such as a Post Office where several different kinds of stamps and seals were needed. Stamps are still used in some business and office circles and an object such as this could still be useful. This item is of interest as an example of office equipment in frequent use in the years gone by. It will be useful for display. This is a black metal object. It has a metal stand with a circular column inserted in the centre of the stand. The top of the column has an oval-shaped handle. A circular piece of metal is attached to the column by a series of radiating spokes. Attached to the outer rim are twelve metal clips for holding office stamps (usually held by the handle of the stamp). The metal clips are held in place by metal studs. The ends of the metal clips clamp over to hold the stamps. The metal clips are all slightly misshapen. history of warrnambool, vintage office equipment -

Household, Hat Pin Holder, Early 20th century
This hat pin stand would have been a common object in a woman’s bedroom in the past, especially about the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century when women wore large hats and they needed large pins to hold them in place.
