This photograph is of the first Church of England in Orbost, dedicated on Sunday, 6th March, 1892 by the Rt. Rev. T. Geo, Bishop of Melbourne, The church was later used in the `1970s by the Orbost State School as a music, physical education room until it was moved. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Photograph taken in 1990 of a white marble memorial to Samuel and Annie Lewers. The memorial was erected by the congregation in 1897 at St Paul's Church of England, Linton. Samuel Lewers was the first manager of the Linton branch of the Bank of NSW, a Justice of the Peace, and first President of Shire of Grenville. The entire Lewers family was deeply involved in church life, Samuel Lewers having played a prominent role in raising money to build the church. Samuel Lewers died in 1895 and the memorial was dedicated on 15.03.1897. The Church of England Parish Hall in Linton was built in 1909-1910, using what was at the time an innovative building technique - concrete blocks with no frame. The Parish Hall was used for countless functions and activities in Linton until about 1989, after which it was considered unsafe to use.Colour photograph showing a building made from concrete blocks. The foundation stone for St Chad's was laid on the 20th June 1914 and the church was completed and opened in August. The building was a wooden structure capable of seating about 150 people. The foundation stone for St George's Church of England, Mont Albert was laid in 1886 on land donated by Edward Dyer and the first service was preached in January 1887. From 1904 until 1907 it was known as Holy Trinity, Surrey Hills. The original church was weatherboard and replaced by a brick one in the Gothic Revival style which was designed by local architect George J V Blackburne, who also designed the Wesleyan School at Surrey Hills. The building was partly funded by donations, profits from a bazaar and concert, and other people donated furnishings. The church had boundaries along Mont Albert Road and St Georges Road. In 1998 the Church was sold and converted into a complex of units. Its current address is 19 St Georges Avenue, Mont Albert. The purpose of this working bee in 1923 was to close up the double gateway, which in earlier times had been used for entry of by horse-drawn vehicles to the church grounds. 'Lugano' was built in 1893 for William Wilson, a prominent stonemason and importer of marble fireplaces. In 1903 it became the home of William Holmes who was Chief Electrical Engineer for the Victorian Railways. He designed the electrification of the Melbourne suburban network. 'Lugano' stayed in the Holmes family until the 1930s.
