One of a series of four boards of mounted replica medals of the Australian Defence Forces. This board shows medals pertaining to World War 1. Replicas include the 1914 Star, 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Mercantile Marine War Medal, 80th Anniversary of Armistice Remembrance Medal. Also a WW1 Memorial Plaque and Anzac Commemorative Medal. There is a cloth patch embroidered 'H.M.A.S.' and one with embroidered Air Force wings from the Australian Flying Corps. The text reproduced at the base accompanied the WW1 memorial plaques. In 1899 the Boers, descendants of Dutch settlers, declared war on the British forces. Enthusiastic civilians throughout the Australian colonies volunteered for service, supported by their respective colonial governments. After Federation Commonwealth units were also mobilised. Others who were unable to join Colonial or Commonwealth units enlisted in forces raised by other nations including Britain and South Africa. The first joint colonial regiment, the Australian Regiment, was formed from companies representing Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. The British gradually wore down Boer resistance, and peace was declared on 31 May 1902. Over 15,000 Australians served in the Boer War. Australian casualties totalled about 1400, with 518 killed. Six Australians were awarded the Victoria Cross for their bravery. Children in schools around the different colonies of Australia (this was prior to Federation) raised money to hold Peace picnics. Wodonga's Peace picnic was held at the racecourse. Only about 70 of these medallions were struck. They were presented to the children who raised the most money for the Peace picnic in each area.This artefact has local, national and international significance as it recognises the first major international conflict in which Australian colonial soldiers were involved,A small medallion issued in commemoration of peace at the end of the Boer War. Commemorative medal made for the 1897 Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Two portraits of Queen Victoria on the face, one as a young girl, the other an older, veiled woman. The medal originally had the words "Queen Victoria's 60th Year of Reign 1837 to 1897" around the perimeter of the face, however the medallion is so worn that the words are barely visible. The reverse has the Australian Coat of Arms, within a diamond shape. The words "Diamond Jubilee / Australia's Celebration" are around the perimeter (barely readable due to wear). A small crown is above the Coat of Arms and the date "1897" is below it, these are also barely visible due to wear. The medallion appears to have been of gilt plate, however only small areas of gilding are left on the reverse side. This medal has been produced in 1953 in Australia to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11 of England in June 1953. Many commemorative medals such as these were distributed in 1953. Queen Elizabeth is still Queen of England today and Australia is a member country of the British Empire.This medal has no known local provenance and is only useful for display.This is a round bronze medal with an image of Queen Elizabeth on one side and the Australian Coat of Arms on the other. The term Rechabites refers to a religious order, similar in some ways to the Nazirites, and they are mentioned by Eusebius of Emesa. In more recent times, the name has been used by Christian groups keen to promote total abstinence from alcohol, such as the Independent Order of Rechabites. The chain was added by Mrs Clarrie Rouget - daughter-in-law.A small gold I.O.R Independent order of Rechabites medallion on a gold open paperlink style chain to be worn around the neck. It has eight flat star shape points around the edge of a round blue centre which has a shield with symbols representing the Rechabites. On the back is the inscription as noted in detail in the next section below. The chain was added by Mrs Clarrie Rouget - daughter-in-law. It is displayed in a velvet purple jewelley box which has a cream and flock lining.
