Iron leg shackles were worn by convicts to both punish inmates and prevent escape. Combined with physically exhausting labour, they helped control prisoners. The shackles weighed a considerable amount (there were differing sizes) which made it difficult to walk easily, resulting in a shuffling gait.A pair of very heavy leg irons. The Bright-Tawonga Road was built in 1896, connecting the Ovens and Kiewa valleys. The article gives an description of the event.The Bright - Tawonga road connected Tawonga to the larger town of Bright and the closest railway service. This road provided the Upper Kiewa Valley with access to larger markets, alternative transport and increased facilities not available in the Kiewa Valley in the early, pre SEC days. The flywheel possibly belongs to a Walker's Cherub Mark III Ship-log taffrail, how the flywheel operates is a metal loop of the recording log would have been connected to the flywheel, so you could see if it was spinning properly. After the flywheel, is the rotor that was towed behind the ship and the revolutions of the rotor would register on the indicator, thus measuring the distance the vessel had travelled. Thomas Ferdinand Walker (1837–1921) first patented the Cherub log in 1878. It was one of the first logs in which the recorder was placed onboard a ship rather than being incorporated as part of the rotor. The Cherub Mark III series was produced from 1930 it came in two versions a thousand-mile which is quite rare and a five hundred-mile version.This ship log flywheel was invented and made by a significant marine instrument maker and innovator of machinery Thomas Walker. This item was purchased by Mechanical Engineering upon the request of Dr Len Cubitt, to determine wind speed at various heights above the ground. Investigation related to wind energy harnessing projects, including that undertaken by MARS Industries in Ballarat. These two chairs are Grant Featherston prototypes of the 1947 Relaxation Chairs. These chairs came from the Boyd family's Camberwell home (666 Riversdale Road, Camberwell, formerly 158 Riversdale Road) and were originally upholstered with webbing. This photo was part of the Hill family's collection. Notes indicate that it was probably taken by Walter Hill, son of William Valentine Hill of 10 Pembroke Street, Surrey Hills. Walter Ormond Hill was born in 1887. No death record has been located. It is not known where the photo was taken.
