Domestic object - Wooden Salt Box
Wall-mounted salt boxes were commonly used in kitchens before the 20th century to store coarse salt, which was essential for cooking and food preservation. The wall-mounting design kept the salt dry and easily accessible near the cooking area. These were widely used in European and early colonial kitchens, particularly before refrigeration made food preservation less reliant on salt. The rounded, barrel-like base and decorative curved back panel suggest this may date from the late 19th to early 20th century. This is a vintage wooden salt box with a cylindrical base and a hinged lid. The back panel extends upward with a curved top, featuring a hole for mounting on a wall. The lid is flat and circular, designed to be lifted for easy access to the contents. The wood grain is visible, and the box has a worn, aged patina, indicating years of use. The hinges are metal and show signs of aging, including rust and wear.cooking, salt, preservation, food, kitchen, household item -

Domestic object - Cooking pot and lid, T & C Clarke and Co Ltd, 1880 to1910
T & C Clark & Company Limited, based at Shakespeare Foundry, was founded in 1795 by Thomas and Charles Clark and grew to be one of the largest iron foundries in Wolverhampton. The firm was the pioneers of Enamelled Cast ironware and the founder Charles Clerk went on to became mayor of Wolverhampton in 1860 after also serving as a Councilor, Alderman, and later Chief Magistrate. The company exhibited many products at the International Exhibition of 1862 at South Kensington, alongside the gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society. The company was also awarded the silver medal for its products at the International Paris Exhibition in 1878. The company's product range included thousands of items, both domestic and industrial. T & C Clark pioneered the use of enamelled cast ironware, after taking out a patent in 1839 guaranteed to be free of lead or arsenic. In the late 1940s and 1950s the company produced acid-resisting enamelled cast iron boiling pans; steam-jacketed pans; stills; square and rectangular tanks; open and closed mixing vessels; flanged pipes; bends and tees; laboratory equipment; small scale plant; evaporating bowls; beakers; sulphonates; and glass-lined mild steel tanks for beer, mineral water, and food. The company is listed as enamelled chemical plant manufacturers in Kelly's 1962 Wolverhampton Directory, but within a few years, the company had ceased trading. The cooking pot is significant because it demonstrates one of the social norms founded by early settlers to this region. That close ties to "Mother England" and the "establishment" was still very strong. The social and family values from the British way of life was ingrained in colonial society until well past Australian Federation in July of 1900. It was not until the friendly "American soldier" invasion during World War II that the Empire mindset was slowly being eroded away. This change was the slowest in semi remote rural areas such as the Warrnambool district. Cast iron open fire cooking pot with lidCLARK & Co. Domestic object - Soup Ladle
This type of long-handled ladle was used for serving soups, stews, and gravies in kitchens of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Often found in farmhouse kitchens or industrial food preparation settings, ladles like this were designed for use over open fires or large cooking pots.A large, deep-bowled ladle with a long, flat metal handle that widens slightly at the end. The surface of the ladle appears worn and tarnished, showing signs of age and oxidation. There is a small hole at the top of the handle, possibly for hanging storage. Domestic object - Primus Stove
This type of portable kerosene pressure stove was commonly used for camping, outdoor cooking, and military applications in the early 1900s to mid-century. It operates by pressurizing liquid fuel (such as kerosene or methylated spirits) using the pump, which is then vaporized and burned to produce a strong, hot blue flame. These stoves were popular with travellers, explorers, and rural households before the widespread availability of electric and gas stoves. This is an antique portable kerosene or spirit stove, likely from the early to mid-20th century. The stove consists of a circular metal fuel tank at the base, which is darkened and aged, possibly made of brass or iron. A raised burner assembly sits atop the fuel tank, enclosed by a metal wind shield, which appears to be stamped with a manufacturer's name or logo. The burner head is centrally positioned, with a control valve and a pressurizing pump extending from the tank’s side. The top of the stove features a circular cast-iron trivet or pot stand with multiple supports, allowing pots or kettles to rest above the flame. The trivet has a well-worn patina, with visible signs of heat exposure and rust. It may indicate a well-known brand such as Primus, Optimus, or another vintage stove manufacturer.cooking, gas, kitchen, household item -

Domestic object - Enamel Cooking Scoop
Likely used in kitchens, bakeries, or dairies for scooping liquids, grains, flour, or milk. Common in early to mid-20th century farmhouses, enamelware was a durable and sanitary choice before the widespread use of plastic and stainless steel. The wooden handle suggests it was meant for handling hot substances without burning the user’s hands. Could have been used for pouring batter, scooping milk, or measuring dry goods.Enamel Ladle or Cooking Scoop. A white enamel bowl with a rounded shape, deep enough for scooping or pouring liquids or grains. A blue rim lines the upper edge of the bowl, though it shows chipping and wear in places. A wooden handle, turned and shaped for grip, is attached with a metal connector to the bowl. The handle appears to be light-coloured wood, possibly beech or pine, and has signs of age and wear.cooking, kitchen, scoop, food, household item -

Domestic object - Saucepans, C.Clark & Co, 1900's
This large deep pan (with a long handle) was used by pioneer families, mainly rural folk, that needed a pan which could cope with an open fire heat source, in or mainly outside the homestead. This pan was used in the early to late 1900's for the stews and other meals required by hard working stockmen and farmers that had irregular lunch and dinner or tea breaks under sometimes hard and gruelling conditions. Hot plates were normally not in use.Two vintage black sooted heavy cast iron cooking pots or saucepans with rounded sides and long straight fluted handles angled at approximately sixty degrees upwards. This angle ensured that both distance from flame intensity and least bending of knees when lifting is at a minimum. It was used on the open fire or on a wood fired stove, possible on the fire direct.'6 pints' has indecipherable inscription. On the back of the '4' pints one - 'C. Clark & Co. Domestic object - Kitchen Strainer & Serving Spoon
These utensils appear to be vintage kitchen tools, likely from the early to mid-20th century. The rust and patina suggest prolonged exposure to moisture or age-related oxidation. Such tools were commonly used in home and commercial kitchens for cooking, straining liquids, and draining fried foods. The presence of a wooden handle on the strainer indicates a more traditional manufacturing style before plastic became widely used in kitchenware. These items may have been part of a household or a communal kitchen, possibly from a rural or historical setting. The image features two kitchen utensils – a metal slotted spoon and a fine-mesh strainer. The slotted spoon has a long, rusted metal handle and a wide, oval-shaped head with multiple horizontal slots for draining liquids. The fine-mesh strainer consists of a round wire mesh bowl with a metal frame and a twisted metal handle with a wooden grip.kitchen strainer, slotted serving spoon, household item, cooking -

Cast Iron Camp Oven with Lid
Camp ovens were used for cooking indoors and outdoors. They were used to perform a variety of tasks and to last forever. The use of dry sand moulds for casting the iron created a smoother surface. A more even surface meant more even contact points with food. The lid is close fitting.Used by people in the Kiewa Valley including campers, drovers, shearers, bushmen, miners and groups eg.scouts to cook food.Camp ovens originally named Dutch ovens were made from cast iron, were heavy and were developed in the Netherlands in the 1700s. Australian drovers, shearers, bushmen, campers and miners used the cast iron camp ovens. This one has legs and was used outside. The lid is slightly concave enabling coals from the cooking fire to be placed on top as well as below. This provides more uniform internal heat and lets the inside act as an oven.
