The subject of this photograph was unidentified for many years, but in 2014 the photograph was identified as probably of Mary Broadstock Tame, the aunt of John Burnham Tame. (J. B. Tame was the son of Mary's brother Charles Tame). Mary Broadstock Tame was the wife of Joseph Shepherd, who ran Shepherd's Family Grocery & Ironmongery store in Sussex Street, Linton. Originally Joseph Shepherd's "Family Grocer & Ironmonger" store, run for a short time after Joseph Shepherd's death by his nephew Alf Darling. Part of the shop became Gordon Bennett butchery in 1930s, and was used as a butcher's shop until the 1980s. Last butcher was Frank Verdoorn. Surrey College was opened in early 1892 by Rev. Dr Frederick Darling who had been the first minister of the Presbyterian Church in Canterbury Road. He resigned this position to open the school which operated until 1908 with additional premises at 12 Vincent Street. The school had 40 boarders as well as day boys. Courses included algebra, euclid, history, typewriting, shorthand and drill. In the 1930s, Nethercourt Private Hospital took over the site. Later it became St Jude's Hospital. land in front of the building was subdivided off in the 1970s. The building is still extant as a private dwelling with York Street, Surrey Hills as the address. This is one of 3 photos donated by Susan Hobbs, whose grandfather Rev. George Edward Downton is thought to have been a student at the college. George E. Downton was born in Avoca in 1885. He was later a missionary in New Guinea and Secretary to the Australian Board of Missions in Adelaide. He died in 1926 or 1927. There are 4 additional figures in the background and an additional house can be seen beyond the property boundary. Many of the boys wear or hold caps or boaters. The 2 men in the back row on the right are wearing academic gowns and mortar boards. The gentleman with the beard on the end is Rev. Frederick Darling, the Principal of the college. Catherine Holmes married William Coghill Junior. William died in 1884. This is possibly a photo of Catherine in her mourning clothes. They had no children. His estate passed to Catherine. In 1886 Catherine accompanied by her brother, Edward Carter Holmes, Mr. Holmes a farmer at Ascot and her companion Mrs. Mark Gardiner [Gardner], wife of the contractor for laying down the wood pavement in Elizabeth- street, sailed for Queensland aboard the elegant steamship, ‘Ly-ee-Moon’ to visit her sister Adelaide Reid and purchase a property in the Darling Downs, Qld. Tragically all three, and the gold sovereigns they were carrying to purchase same, were lost when the steamship struck rocks and was wrecked off the rugged Green Cape Coast, just south of Bega, New South Wales [Jane Dyer, 15 June 2024]Black and white photograph of a seated woman wearing black clothing, a cap with centrally parted hair.
