Born in 1922 David Caro was educated at the Universities of Melbourne and Birmingham. Caro and John Rouse built the world’s first high speed, variable energy nuclear accelerator or Cyclotron. He was appointed as Vice-Chancellor at the University of Melbourne, and he later became Vice-Chancellor at the Northern Territory University and Chancellor at the University of Ballarat (later Federation University. This trophy was awarded from 1965 to 2010 and the tray contains the names of 45 winners. David Chittick, after whom the trophy is named, was the winner in 1966. As he was a prominent member of the Warrnambool Apex Club it is presumed that this was an Apex trophy. An Apex Club, a service club for members aged between 18 and 45, was first formed in Geelong in 1931 and the Warrnambool Apex Club was the fifth club established in 1931. It went into recess in 1941, was re-formed in 1952 and closed in 2011.This trophy is an important memento from the time when the Warrnambool Apex Club was a prominent service club in the city. This is a silver tray with a heavily-embossed rim of scrolls and patterns. The inner section of the tray has the names of the winners of the trophy etched around the edge.
