Photograph, Eltham Methodist Church, 1909
Situated at 810 Main Road on the corner of John Street. The Church was surrounded by a picket fence and tall pine trees. The Church was built by George Stebbings in the 1850s and is an example of fine craftmanship. Formerly Wesleyan, Methodist then Uniting church; the foundations of the church building were constructed with stone from the walls of the first Eltham State Primary School (No. 209) building which collapsed in 1874 and were purchased by Robert David Taylor. REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010 via Victorian Heritage Database What is significant? The 1880 bichromatic brick church and the surrounding site to the title boundaries. How is it significant? The church is architecturally, historically, socially and spiritually significant to the Shire of Nillumbik. Why is it significant? The church is architecturally significant as a finely detailed example of a brick 19th century rural community church, one of only four in the Shire (Criteria E & B). The church is historically significant as an important link with the time when Eltham was a small, insular country settlement. Also for the historical evolution visible in the complex, with the modest 1880s church and larger red brick rear hall from the early 20th century as a reflection of population growth in the area (Criterion A). The church is historically, spiritually and socially significant because it has played, and continues to play, an important part in the spiritual and social life of the community (Criterion G).Sepia postcard of Eltham Methodist Church, 1909eltham, methodist church, church, state school no. 209, eltham state school, robert david taylor, eltham uniting church, uniting church, wesleyan church -

Financial record - Toc-H Journal, Circa 1936
Ellerslie Hall was established in Warrnambool in 1889, as one of the first private schools of the time. Apart from use as a private college, the hall housed the first classrooms of the Warrnambool High School (then Warrnambool Agricultural High School) for a period in 1907 then went on to be established as the home of the 3rd Warrnambool Scout Troup... in the 1920’s which had associations with the Toc H movement. The hall was also the location of the first Lutheran services in Warrnambool from 1933. In more recent years the property has been used as a residence and for office use. In 2023 the hall is being used by the Sanctuary Church. This journal represents a link to an important International movement, the Toc H movement. One of the founders, Tubby Clayton, visited Warrnambool in 1925 and again in 1952 when he stayed with Sir David Fletcher Jones who considered him one of the greatest spiritual influences in his life. Photograph (1926), J. W. Symons, QUEEN CARNIVAL, 1926
The Queen Carnival was conducted by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Council under the patronage of the Loyal Orange Institution. Minnie Pouliot became the Queen of Victory in Sunshine, and later (2 October 1926) she was crowned Queen of Queens in the district coronation ceremony at Footscray, competing with Footscray, Yarraville, and Williamstown districts. Miss Pouliot was again crowned Queen of Queens at the final coronation (6 October 1926) which was held at the Temperance Hall in Melbourne. The other women in the photograph are: Misses E. Thompson and J. Milne (Maids of Honour), Misses Marie Pritchard and Joyce Dedrick (train-bearers), and the flower girl is Jean Percy. Minnie Pouliot was born in 1900 and lived at 169 Morris St, Sunshine from 1910 until her passing in 1983. She married John Caithness on 16 April 1939, and had one son Max Caithness. Minnie Pouliot was an active member of the Sunshine Choral Society, and she also served on the Sunshine Hospital Auxiliary. Miss Pouliot was employed as Secretary at H. V. McKay until 1939, and she was also generally involved in community activities. Details sourced from the Trove web site indicate that she was involved in the Sunshine Tennis Club (1925), the Sunshine Flower Show (1925), as the Treasurer of the Playground Committee (1927), and as Secretary and exercise participant of the Sunshine Presbyterian Girls' Club (1937). Minnie Pouliot was the singer at a wedding (1938), and in 1925 Pouliot and Caithness are recorded as being members of the Loyal Sunshine Lodge. The above details have been compiled from information on the Trove web site including the Sunshine Advocate of 9 October 1926, and also from information supplied by Mr Max Caithness. This item is of historical significance because it indicates that an event such as the Queen Carnival used to be held 90 years ago, and It also reminds us that in the past membership of a Lodge was a normal part of the life of many citizens.Photographic image held within a glass faced brown wooden frame.No. 230 SUNSHINE LODGES No. 90 / PRESENTED TO SISTER M. Theatre Program, Cass & Clothier (Printers), Chang (film) : A Drama of the Wilderness screened at the Athenaeum Theatre in 1928, 28/01/1928
The last silent film to be shown at the Athenaeum Theatre presented by E J Carroll. The theatre was managed by Frank Talbot Pty Ltd during his long lease of the theatre following his major renovations when Henry White the architect built an intimate theatre inside the old Athenaeum Hall. In addition to musical accompaniment for the film, the orchestra, and sometimes singers entertained audiences before the films commenced and during interval. Filmed on location in the jungles of Siam (Thailand). Programs, printed for early films at the Athenaeum Theatre provided the full program for the audience in the centre pages and gave background information about the story and the actors. Chang was the last silent film to be shown at the Athenaeum Theatre before the Jazz Singer changed cinema going for ever with the introduction of both vocal and musical sound. No longer was the cinema orchestra required to provide atmosphere thus changing the cinema experience forever.Paper program of 20 pages presenting the Paramount Picture "Chang".
