Legging
Brown leather cylindrical shaped gaiter with one leather strap for fastening. One strap is attached to the lower edge of the interior with a metal pin. This crosses over the lower exterior and passes through a leather loop at the front. The strap then wraps around the gaiter and passes through a second leather loop at the front. This strap appears to pass through two rectangular cut out holes. The edges of the gaiter are unfinished and all elements are affixed through metal pins rather than stitching.Stamped in black ink on interior is the word "WONDER" alongside other illegible markings.legging, gaiter, first world war -

Canvas Gaiters - US Army, c 1938-1945
A pair of United States Army drab canvas gaiters, worn with shoes or boots by US servicemen. The gaiters are laced with nine hooks and ten eyelets on the outer side of each, and fastened to the shoe by a webbing strap and metal buckle. History / Summary US Army drab gaiters of type M-1938, Dismounted, Protective, Stock No. 72-L-62027 – 72-L-62048, were issued in four sizes from R1 –R4, and worn extensively during the Second World War. Also identified as leggings. -

The man in the photograph is Arthur Edward (Ted) Child. The photograph is from the album of his daughter, Ivy Child. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Ivy married Henry William Burgess (1906 – 1968) in 1944. The photographs remain in their original state in the album with individual copies made. This coat was part of the Presbyterian moderator's regalia which also consisted of a tri-corn hat, black bib, lace jabot, britches, silk stockings, gaiters and buckled shoes.Black wool, lined cutaway coat with a crew neck. The coat has seven pairs of black buttons and is secured edge to edge with a single hook and eye at the 4th and 5th buttons. It has lace cuffs, braiding and pleats at the back. The black lining is quilted at the top and there is a pocket on the inside right breast. The sleeves of the coat are lined with white fabric and the lace cuffs are secured with six pearl buttons. Riding Boots - Army
Leather riding boots were worn by the cavalry for their protection and endurance. Gaiters were also added to increase the protection and comfort. See KVHS 0267, KVHS 1365, KVHS 1367 Men from the Kiewa Valley joined the army and some were in the cavalry. See KVHS 0267, KVHS 1365; 1367Brown leather boots with sewn-on thick sole. Covered ankle with 8 eyelets for thin brown laces. This leather piece is sewn onto the upper front leather piece. It has a cotton piece at the heel to enable the wearer to pull the boot onto the foot. It has a soft leather tongue.
