The string has long been a household and office utility, but an easily tangled one. generations of manufactures have devised cast-iron string holders and string reels in an attempt to distribute this material more efficiently. Many different designs of cast-iron string holders exist some nickel, others painted many had an open pattern so clerks behind the counter of the general store could see at a glance if he or she was about to run out of string. In the 20th century, string holders became more decorative, morphing into novelty items for the home. History: Starting from 1869, the young carpenter by trade, Melvin Newton Lovell (1844-1895) from Erie, Pennsylvania, later a manufacturer and successful businessman, was granted numerous patents for various devices, between them several patents for adding machines and cash registers in 1891. The Lovell Manufacturing Company was founded by Melvin Newton Lovell who was born in Allegheny, Venango county, Pennsylvania, on 31 August 1844, to Darius T. Lovell (1815-1855) and Susan B. (Conover) Lovell (1827-1883). When Melvin Lovell was a boy, the family moved to Kerrtown, a village located in the vicinity of Titusville, Pennsylvania. There Melvin served an apprenticeship as a carpenter's and his natural mechanical talent, soon enabled him to become a skilled workman. In 1861, at seventeen years of age, Melvin left home, without parental authority, and joined the Union Army soon after the outbreak of the Civil war, in August 1862, he enlisted as a private in the 127th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged the end of May 1863. In 1865 he took up residence in Erie, where he worked as a carpenter for some years. In 1869 Melvin Lovell invented and patented several useful articles for household use, and in that year he began the manufacturing certain of these inventions, in partnership with Franklin Farrar Adams, another inventor. The company's principal products were washing machines and step-ladders but also made many other cast iron household items known as the “Anchor Brand” when manufacturing began in earnest in 1881. As a result, the Lovell Manufacturing Company grew to be one of the largest industrial concerns of its kind in the country, recognized as being the most extensive manufacturer of clothes-wringers in the entire world. Lovell established sales agencies for his products in all parts of the country, and these branches were known as the Lovell stores. These goods were sold on the instalment plan, an innervation at the time for which Lovell was credited as the originator. Lovell invented and patented the famous wringer which bears his name, and in later years he confined his operations largely to the manufacture and improvement of this invention. Lovell was also one of the organisers and stockholders of the Combination Roll & Rubber Manufacturing Co, of New York, which was formed to manufacture his patents. With headquarters in New York and a factory at Bloomfield, New Jersey. Unfortunately, during a trip to Atlanta, while representing the state of Pennsylvania at a trade exposition, he passed away in his prime, on 21 November 1895, and was buried in Erie Cemetery, Erie, PA. Today the Lovell Manufacturing Company and foundry is preserved and situated at Lovell Place 1301 French Street Erie Pennsylvania, the site is regarded as a historic complex and national historic district. It includes nine contributing buildings built between 1883 and 1946 and has now been converted to luxury apartments.An item used in shops, offices etc to dispense string although the item was commonly found in many areas of general commerce. It was made by a factory and patented in the USA by Melvin Lovell who had invented the first adding machine and the original mangle or wringer washing machine used in every house throughout the world from 1891 and the forerunner to our modern day washing machines. Document, Sedgwick, was known as Upper Emu Creek until 1901. It is located ten miles south of Bendigo in hilly sedimentary and granite country.The first freehold grants were taken up in 1854. In 1861 the Strathfieldsaye Road District was Proclaimed. Five years later it became the Shire of Strayhfieldsaye.Mining west of the Axe Creek commenced in 1863. Agriculture, farmers made modest livings from vineyards, orchards,dairy cattle, eggs and tomatoes. The Osborne family had seventy acres planted to apples. PMH&PS applied for a LocalHistory Grant to publish this book on member Sigred BORKE'S behalf. Grant was denied but Sigrid produced it anyway, with family doing the design and typesetting and partner Bill IRELAND loaning the money. Purchased at the launch 15 December, International Bookstore, Trades Hall. Subsequently this book won the Victorian Local History Award for the Best Collaborative Effort, with $1000 prize.'In and Out of Port - Voices from the Port of Melbourne: An Oral History' by Sigrid BORKE. Rev. Thomas Williams was grandfather of the Lindsay children. He is credited with encouraging his grandchildren in their artistic talents. Both Lionel and Normam learnt their model making skills from him. Creswick Hospital was foundation stone was laid in 1863. It operated as a hospital until 1911 when it was sold to the government as part of the School of Forestry (now University of Melbourne). The model shows it as a red brick building. In the 1870s it was painted as a white building. The Museum has b/w photos of the building taken prior to rendering. The people of Creswick collected fund for the project and obtained a government grant. The 1857 survey map of the proposed township shows the area at Eastern Hills reserved for a hospital and Benevolent SocietyThe model's unique association with the Lindsay Artist of Creswick. Bernhard Gerstle & his family (parents & siblings) were German nationals working in Tehran, Iran upon the outbreak of World War II. In 1941, after the installation of a pro-British ruler to the Persian throne, all German nationals were targeted as threats to national security. The women and children evacuated to Stuttgart, Germany via Turkey, while the men were handed over to British forces. Bernhard was taken by ship (the SS Rona) to Bombay & then to Australia (on the SS Rangitiki). He was then marched in to Loveday internment camp 10, South Australia. In January 1945 the German & Italian internees at Loveday were transferred to Tatura Camp 1. Bernhard remained there until after the war & his eventual release, on 29th August 1946. Bernhard chose & was granted permission to remain in Australia post-war, as did many civilian internees, after their examination by a Committee of Inquiry which investigated their political leanings & other criteria for their supposed suitability as Australian residents. The biography also recounts his employment post-war, marriage in 1952 & his later naturalisation as an Australian citizen. Other material includes Gerstle family history from the perspective of Bernhard's sister & family, who remained in Stuttgart; background on the Gerstle family's Russian origins; and a biography of Oskar Speck, famous kayaker, amongst other things, who was interned along with Bernhard & who became good friends with the family; a brief historical background of the Allied forces/Persia invasion; and extracts of Tatura Camp 3 internee Helga Griffin's book, "Sing Me That Lovely Song Again". Bust
The bust of Major William Tackaberry was in the possession of the late Mr. Eric Streitbert, a nephew of major Tackaberry. Mr. Streitberg lived with his Aunt, Mrs. Linda Tackaberry and Uncle, William (Bill) Tuckaberry prior to and after WW2. Mr. Streitberg, who died in 1998 at the age of 86, was a member of the 2nd AIF during WW2. He spent 3 1/2 years as a POW on the Thai-Burma railway. Mr. Streitberg gave the bust to his relative, Mr. Stephen Anderson, the Grandson of his cousin the Late Pery Nott, also a nephew of William Tackaberry. It would be appreciated if this information could be kept with the bust of Major Tackaberry and the family association noted. The Australian Service Records of Major Tackaberry during WW1 are also attached. These two chairs are Grant Featherston prototypes of the 1947 Relaxation Chairs. These chairs came from the Boyd family's Camberwell home (666 Riversdale Road, Camberwell, formerly 158 Riversdale Road) and were originally upholstered with webbing. The fixings were modified in the final product Relaxation chairs. Robin Boyd designed the Ivanhoe home of Grant and Mary Featherston (1967).Dark orange with black fine check woven wool. The Rooks family emigrated from England in 1857. Abraham Rooks came to Forest Hill in 1862 and leased 79 acres. After 10 years of successful farming he owned the land. Abraham Rooks held the first church meetings in his home and in 1865 was one of the trustees to receive a crown grant to erect a chapel. In 1970 a school was attached to the chapel. Generations of the Talbot family have called Malahide Castle home. They played significant roles in Irish political and social life. Set in 260 acres the castle is only 10 minutes from Dublin airport. https://www.malahidecastleandgardens.ie/ The estate began in 1185, when Richard Talbot, a knight who accompanied Henry II to Ireland in 1174, was granted the "lands and harbour of Malahide." The oldest parts of the castle date back to the 12th century and it was home to the Talbot family for 791 years, from 1185 until 1976, the only exception being the period from 1649–60, when Oliver Cromwell granted it to Miles Corbet after the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland; Corbet was hanged following the demise of Cromwell, and the castle was restored to the Talbots. The building was notably enlarged in the reign of Edward IV, and the towers added in 1765. The estate survived such losses as the Battle of the Boyne, when fourteen members of the owner's family sat down to breakfast in the Great Hall, and all were dead by evening, and the Penal Laws, even though the family remained Roman Catholic until 1774. In 1918 during the First World War a mooring-out base for airships was established in the grounds of the castle, used by airships from RNAS Anglesey in Wales which conducted anti-submarine operations in the Irish Sea. There were plans to base airships here from 1919, but these were abandoned at the end of the war.[1] In the 1920s the private papers of James Boswell were discovered in the castle, and sold to American collector Ralph H. Isham by Boswell's great-great-grandson Lord Talbot de Malahide. Malahide Castle and Demesne was eventually inherited by the 7th Baron Talbot and on his death in 1973, passed to his sister, Rose. In 1975, Rose sold the castle to the Irish State, partly to fund inheritance taxes.
