The photograph was taken on the property owned by the Beer family, situated on Lancefield Road. When Europeans first settled the area and the property was acquired by Michael Coolaton in the 1850s, it straddled either side of the Emu Creek. After the death of Michael Coolaton in 1896 and until the Beer family purchased it in 1953, the property was leased to a number of tenants who concentrated on a variety of grazing and cereal growing pursuits. The Beer family have raised cattle and a Clydesdale stud. Among the early settlers in Moorabbin Shire were blacksmiths who made tools for the other settlers who were establishing the homes, market gardens, farms, orchards and various businesses. Early settlers were self reliant and repaired their own equipment for kitchen,dairy, farm, horses, wagons, carts using various tools . These large spanners were used on a horse-drawn wagons, carriages, stagecoaches, and carts. A wheelwright would use this tool to make or repair the wheels. All sizes of buggy spanners, or wagon wrenches, were needed as wagon wheels were of many different sizes. This wagon wheel spanner is typical of the type used by early settlers in Moorabbin Shire c1900 Horse-drawn wagons were used to transport the produce of the market gardeners to the Melbourne markets. There are two large flat steel hooks attached to the sides with bolts and nuts and it has two metal rings at the bottom. It would have been attached to a horse collar and used to to distribute the load around a horse's neck and shoulders when pulling a wagon or plough. The collar often supports and pads a pair of curved metal or wooden pieces, called hames, to which the traces, which attach to the wagon or plough, of the harness are attached. Embarked for Basra (Iraq) via Bombay 25.7.1916. It appears he was invalided to India on 12.11.1916, does not state why. He joined the Wireless Signal Service Depot in Rawalpindi India on 2.12.1917. Embarked from Bombay to Basra 27.2.1918 as part of 1st Aust & NZ Wireless Signal Sqd and joined the unit near Baghdad on 6.4.1918. Discharged from the AIF on 7.8.1919 as medically unfit.Framed, black & white photo of SAPPER JAMES MERVYN HARVEY No 14510 1st Australian Wireless Squadron AIF.
