Lieutenant General Henry John Coates AC MBE was a senior officer in the Australian Army who served as Chief of the General Staff from 1990 to 1992. The name of the CGS’s aide de camp officer is unknown. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. After 1885 N.J. Caire gave up his city work and made his home in South Yarra and devoted the rest of his life to outdoor photography, specializing in the bush, the gullies and the mountains of south-eastern Victoria. John Stuart Dowie AM (15 January 1915 – 19 March 2008) was an Australian painter, sculptor and teacher. He was born in the suburb of Prospect in Adelaide, South Australia, and studied architecture at the University of Adelaide. During World War II, Dowie worked in the Military History Unit of the Australian Imperial Force, and as an assistant to Australia's official war sculptor, Lyndon Dadswell. As a soldier, he was one of the Rats of Tobruk. After studying art in London and Florence, Dowie returned to Australia. His work includes over 50 public sculpture commissions, including the "Three Rivers" fountain in Victoria Square, "Alice" in Rymill Park, the "Victor Richardson Gates" at Adelaide Oval and the "Sir Ross & Sir Keith Smith Memorial" at Adelaide Airport. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1981 in recognition of service to the arts as a sculptor and painter. Dowie died on 19 March 2008, aged 93. John Meikeljohn was born in 1841 in Glasgow. He was educated at Glasgow University and U. P. Theological Hall and ordained at the Glasgow City Mission in 1872. His ministries included: 1874 Kirkmairhill U. O. Lankashire; 1888 south Melbourne Dorcas St.. In 1901 he became the first Moderator General for the Assembly of Australia and was the first Principal Emmnauel College Brisbane. Donald REFSHAUGE (1912-1952) A Senior Technical Scholarship recipient, Donald Hamilton Refshauge studied Commercial Art between 1929 and 1935. He was a highly successful student, winning multiple prizes at competition. His father, John Henry (Johann Heinrich) Refshauge, was headmaster at the Ballarat Agricultural High School. Donald Refshauge worked as a commercial artist near Ballarat, until he moved to Hamilton with his aging mother, Donella, in 1949. Sadly, within three years he died, aged 40. His probate notice labelled him a ‘retired farmer’. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Correspondent for The Argus on 10 May 1901 described the opening on 9 May as: "The Parliament of the Commonwealth was opened yesterday by the Duke, of Cornwall and York, under a Commission signed by Queen Victoria and subsequently endorsed by King Edward VII. The ceremony was marked by the splendour and solemn impressiveness which befitted its historic importance. An immense assemblage of spectators, drawn mainly, of course, from this state, but in part also from each of the other federated states, and including representatives of other portions of the British Empire and of foreign powers, thronged the spacious, stately, and joyously decorated edifice. The picture was magnificent. It must have printed itself indelibly on the sensitive minds of the thousands of Australians who were privileged to behold it. We may assume that artists will reproduce it in worthy and imperishable forms, and that from generation to generation it will be familiar in the households of the Commonwealth. Our children's children, we may gladly say to-day, will not be ashamed of the function which inaugurated the self-governing rights of the southern British Nation. Nothing was omitted which could add to the grandeur and significance of the occasion. Locally, the invitation is part of a group of Federation-related items issued to James Maitland Campbell (and his wife).
